Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

I'm saying the cupboard isn't necessarily empty just because a lot of targets go to Kelce and Juju might leave. We don't know who's ready for a bigger role-but I know Andy Reid just said this week that he expects that Skyy and Toney will have bigger roles in '23.

And Gray may well, too. He hasn't failed, he's just been overshadowed.

We'll see. At any rate, I'm excited, not worried. I can't wait to see what Veach is shopping for and what Andy's going to cook.
Um sure, this is just armchair GM Planet after all in the off-season.

But even Andy and Veach don't know whether Toney is going to be healthy and available in the next post season.

So you can be excited but still worried.

If Blake Vince is willing to let Brown walk then that means he already knows who he wants to target as his replacement and probably will be a better replacement than what we have in Orlando Brown Jr.

Not saying he is the solution but count me in on the Andre Dillard train. I still believe in his potential and would love KC taking a chance on him.

Either that, or this is a wake up call to Orlando that Veach feels that the deal that OBjr is not to be found. If OBjr wants the Chiefs deal he knows what it is

I think Blake Vince was targeting Trent Williams and we ended up with OBJ for a couple of years...

From what I have been reading over the past 24 hours it appears Veach wants a long term solution\deal at LT. So either they get OBJ signed or knowing what Veach has done in the past I think he will swing for the fences for a LT.

Yeah, I think so. I don't know if they'll just sit and draft someone.

With the wording coming out, they don't want the 20 million anvil on the cap so they can't be free agency players, so there's someone they are wanting.

And they want a long term LT deal. So it's either "Go see what you can get OBJ and come back and let us know" or we have something else up our sleeve.

I'm sure Veach is looking at all options for LT with the thought that worst case scenario he could take Dawand Jones at #31 and get a replica of OBJ.

Wanting more money for free agency is a pretty bizarre reasoning to just not tag him, though. If you need $ that bad there are plenty of other avenues to get some. A Jones extension and a Mahomes restructure gets you plenty to work with. Think Veach has realized there's just not a viable path forward to agreeing to a deal that both sides are satisfied with so he's ripping the band-aid off.

Yeah, i have this same sentiment.

Also, in 6 years a 50m dollar qb cap hit wont even seem like a lot with the yearly increase in salary cap.

Eh, not to be able to get to 20 million. Especially if it's a situation where you know there's nothing going to really get done anyway.

If the guy wants to get blown out contractually, go for it. Just let him go do whatever. The best thing Veach and company do and have done is to pivot when one avenue closes.

Hell, he may get out there and find that no one is gonna really do anything more than KC was, so you end up getting him at your number. I doubt it, but who knows.

OBJ wants to be the highest paid LOT in the NFL. He can get it from somebody else BV is not going to tie that kinda of money up with other needs when he can find a cheaper solution either FA or the draft.

IMHO, I say he goes draft because of salary. He will sign a stop gap guy to go a long with the new kid being drafted.

For those claiming a Rookie protecting PMII, we did go with 2 rookies before on the OL.

In BV we trust!

Yeah, looking long term, if you wanna keep the interior together, you may need to go cheaper at T's.

Draft a couple, coach em up.

The more i think about it the more likely i think it is he tests his market and gets humbled. He had 10 games of pretty meh or even bad tape at times.
