Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

So they're just going to let him walk when there are teams, according to CP, that will absolutely overpay for his services?

They could have gotten a 3rd round pick for him easily if that's the case and that 3rd round pick is guaranteed, not just a possibility like a comp pick.

There's a lot more to this situation than we know.

I'm not saying that he's coming back but nobody is really acknowledging that it's even a possibility. It absolutely is.
What someone's worth and what they get offered in a scarce market that's now been flooded with resources are two different things.

There AREN'T a lot of established, credible LTs on the market. And there are teams with more cap space than ways to spend it (Bears).

Somebody is gonna give him money at/near the top 3 LTs in the league, IMO. He, Williams and Tunsil will be the new LT royalty in some order.

But maybe the league sees him differently. I just think the fact that he kept getting named to Pro Bowls via the league vote (not a fan vote) tells us that the league writ large values him more highly than many of us do. It says something about the market for him.

That’s a prediction on your part. Would you have predicted last offseason that Christian Kirk would get a $75 million dollar deal? These teams lose their minds and do really stupid things, and it’s very rare a 27 year old Pro Bowl LT hits the open market.

I won’t be shocked if two shitty teams get in a bidding war and the guy ends up the 2nd or 3rd highest paid tackle in football. Something insane like that always happens in the first wave.

I brought it up yesterday but doesn’t he have to sign the tag to be able to trade him. Maybe him and his agent told Veach that he wouldn’t be signing it.

Thats the thing. Seems like he wants guarantees AND highest average salary while Veach is willing to do one or the other but not both.

I wouldn't be surprised either.

All I'm saying is that I wouldn't be surprised by any outcome at this point.

They do have Poles as their GM. He is from the Veach tree (sounds weird typing that) so I guess we will see if he learned anything or if he is foolish with money.

If the Chiefs have suitors and those teams are willing to give him exactly what he wants, why would he refuse to sign the tag?

Here's the deal. Everybody wants to act like OBJ is definitely gone but that Veach has a plan in place.

It's very possible both of things are true. It's also possible BOTH of those things are false.

We have no idea what actually transpired in those meetings and until he signs somewhere, we won't. There's no foregone conclusions to be had. At least not yet.

If he makes it to FA, then that team is still going to have the chance to offer him what he wants but he'll also have other teams that can enter the bidding and drive up his price.
