Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

I feel like people are gonna be confused when we just go with a rookie tackle.

He's not shown ANYTHING on an NFL field to this point in his career.
You want Taylor to play LT who, by the way, sucked complete shit in the NFL until this season when he showed decent ascension as a RT AND he's struggled with weight maintenance forever. I'd question everything about signing that for 18m a year with some hope and dream he can play LT.

Just go get a LT in the draft. If you want a stop-gap, Dillard can function there. Or Fant. Or Pryor. Etc. But Taylor? No thank you sir.

I still have my doubts as to whether or not they do that but if the goal is to save money and get guys that are going to be here long-term, the draft is the way to do it.

Like I said - middle class LT money.
This reports says you’re pretty on point. But it’s always a 10% tax on FA’s. I’d be happy giving him $20 million avg to be our LT. More than fair

I think he would be a stop gap LT for a year to develop a draft pick. Then return to RT. If he excelled at LT, bonus! Then the 18/year isnt bad at all.

But if he doesnt do well at LT, 18 is pretty expensive for a RT. This is why I feel its expensive and risky.

Yeah, there's no way the Chiefs are giving him $20M AAV right after letting OBJ walk because they think he was overpaid.

$18M AAV for a right tackle is more than just risky.

It all but guarantees you're going to have to settle for less on the left side, let alone when it comes to signing at other positions. You simply cannot pay the RT that much money a year removed from having Wylie hold it down for less than $5M.

Exactly! Risky and Expensive!

The ONLY way it works out is IF he becomes a Pro Bowl LT.

I dunno.

I'm kinda liking the idea of signing Dillard at LT and Pipkins at RT and then letting the draft work itself out. Get yourself a developmental LT on day 2 like Freeland. Get a starting ER in round 1.

Do I really think Dillard and Pipkins would be worse than Brown and Wylie? No, **** no.
