Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

Yeah, I get that you're being cheeky because of the sweeping proclamations that have been made. That's fine.

But let's be real here. There is no "only" way and everybody knows that. The best way to do this, by everyone's admission, is to draft and develop a long-term tackle. But that just can't happen in a vacuum. The Chiefs are going to have to invest veteran resources in the tackle spot as well. I can't imagine a scenario where Veach and Reid take a tackle at the end of round 1 and just insert him into the starting lineup.

What you say sounds easy but it simply isn't. Trotting a rookie out there, no matter how high he is drafted, carries significant risk.
So the same as last year but not with a huge cap hit?

Orlando gave up by far the highest pressure % of any of the top LT’s in the league. He was expensive and Patrick even got hurt. That was with the Chiefs having RB’s chip for him all the time.

I feel like this staff has earned the right to scout a LT and trade up for him.

Nah man, we'll mine 7 starters out this draft. Sit back and relax, no risk no worry.

What? You're way underselling Brown's value to the team. It's not even worth talking about if that's your stance.

OBJ had nothing to do with Patrick getting hurt. That's pure revisionist BS.

Eric Fisher was a smaller school kid who wasn’t strong and struggled with the jump of competition. He was also the best option in the worst draft in recent memory.

I feel a lot better with the tackle prospects this year.

Nah he’d be a cheap rookie, not a 5 year vet thinking he deserves elite money and hasn’t earned it

And yet about 3/4 of them won't ever be legit LT's in the NFL. That's just statistics, dude.

Yeah, it's probably they draft a LT prospect next month.

Expecting him to step in right away and replace OBJ is just plain unrealistic.

Because cheap is all that matters when you have the best QB in history...

We can argue about it all day, but unless the Chiefs have an unexpected trade up their sleeves, it does appear that they're prepared to start a rookie at LT.

I don’t see how you jump to that. Taylor Lewan and Donovan Smith are sitting out there, and I’d be shocked if one of them didn’t end up here. I simply cannot see the Chiefs being so reckless. They will have a proven LT. It’s not going to be a $140 million one, but it’ll be something.

Veach isn’t going to let Brown walk without several contingency plans.

We started 6 rookies this year and won the SB. What's the problem with doing that again?

It really depends. It will be expensive but if a rookie LT gives you average LT play with a few ups and downs I’d take it.

They schemed around Orlando. Why couldn’t they scheme to help a rookie?
