Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.
https://theathletic.com/4161606/2023...3&redirected=1

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

As a comparison, we had 8 rookies play SIGNIFICANT snaps on O/D this past year and one more who played significant snaps on ST. I guess I don't get the desire of Chief Fans to trade our picks.
There is a case, imo, for trading picks simply because, between tenders and existing contracts, the chiefs have more picks than roster spots.

People argued the same last season as well. Instead, we filled holes and let other dudes walk. From what I can tell, we currently have 21 free agents and DO NOT have nearly that many picks.

I think this is what they'll do. Maybe with the exception of the trade up, but I could see that too.

Tunsil. Needs to happen.

Lock up LT for 4 or 5 years with a top 5 player...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Didn't we do this with the Prince. Three years later we are just trusting him to block on field goals and extra points.

1) We didn't draft him.
2) He had a SIGNIFICANT injury

I wouldn't mind Lewan as a stop-gap for a year if he can pass a physical. That's a big if at this point given he just failed one. The worry is him staying health for a full season. The same goes for Tyron Smith if he's released, which is a 50/50 proposition right now and won't happen if Dallas reworks his deal.

The Chiefs simply aren't getting Paris Johnson or Broderick Jones unless they go way up. I give zero shits what the mock draft simulators say, they aren't going to be there for anything less than a 1, 2, and future 1. Guaranteed. They have to hope that Anton Harrison falls into the early 20's ala Darrisaw. Wright is not a LT.

That really leaves the Chiefs with the likelihood of having to take a flawed guy in round 2 like Freeland. Hell, take him at 31 for all I care but it's going to be a bumpy ride year 1. Pairing him with a brokedick isn't he end of the world because he just might be a bit better come mid-season than he is right now.

I can't fathom the Texans trading Tunsil, that's a ****ing pipe dream. Veach is a magician though, so who knows.

Not sure Fish can play LT anymore. But he might be okay at RT. Wouldn't mind signing him to a 1-year deal, draft a RT and see if Fish can't mentor the guy into a good RT.

I'd prefer Tunsil but I trust Veach and have 0 issue with us trading up to land a franchise LT. Hell, I'd prefer we draft a franchise left tackle.

Veach will find a way to add more picks down the road. He always does...

Supposedly the Cowboys are going to rework Smiths deal cause they wanna keep him.

Lewan is an interesting case, he use to be really good. He's what 32 now and has torn an ACL twice... listening to him talk though he seems brutally honest about himself.

Like he said he probably won't be signing anywhere until much closer to training camp just because he has more work to do with his knee and he wants to feel comfortable he can still play. Going so far as to say he's not going to continue if he doesn't have it anymore he isn't gonna be one of those guys.

Also listening to him talk about how he's only a LT and not a RT was hilarious. It had nothing to do with not wanting to do..he was just like I'm terrible at it..if you put me at RT you'll lose. Said the most nerve racking thing ever was having to do left and right side drills at the combine, was worried he'd fall down.

Basically some guys it's no big deal but for him playing the right side is like trying to do things with your off hand just can't do it.

Good stuff on Lewan, I haven't listened to him much this offseason. It's good to know he doesn't know if he'll sign until long after the draft due to his knee. At that point, he's only going to be a depth signing or a guy a team picks up because a dude gets injured in pre-season. He certainly goes off the list of guys you can pencil in right now and that's what the Chiefs need to find in case the draft doesn't fall for them the way they hope/anticipate.

He said something like 12 teams had checked in with him. But on a side note he's 100% interested in the Chiefs so if they want him he'd probably sign earlier.

He also acknowledged he isn't going to get a big contract and he knows that.

Basically his parameters of what he wanted in making a choice was.

1. SB contender
2. I'm a LT
3. I want #77
