Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

If I’m Bart Vengeance, my philosophy is simple. No one gets paid that you don’t really like. Do we really like OBJ, Thornhill, JJSS, Clark, Hardman? No. Let ‘em all walk. The one exception would be if JJSS will take a team friendly deal. But none of these guys get big deals.

He had tons of chip help from the backs. Which obviously was needed against that crazy ass DL. But I think Wylie had a better SB than OBJ did. Didn’t seem to need as much help.

I think most people see it as a value proposition. You can probably get him for 3/36 with maybe 20 guaranteed, while only giving up a 2nd for a guy who has potentially a high ceiling at LT and is more of a sure thing than probably anyone we will be able to get at the end of the 1st or 2nd.

Probably still not ideal, but I'm not sure there is an ideal situation out there right now, unfortunately. I don't even believe keeping OBJ is ideal. It's a tough one, and I'm happy Breach Varch is making the call and not me.
The game I was referring to was the last game of the regular season. I didn't watch the Packers much. Only reason I watched that game is because it was basically a playoff game. And since I was watching the game, I focused on Nijman because he had been discussed here frequently. Again I am going on recall, but I am thinking Hutchinson was kicking his ass. nj2 kind of confirms this by saying the Packers benched him that night.

Ahh, OK. He was actually replaced by Tom earlier in the season as well, possibly because of injury, can't recall. When he came back he was playing RT for the most part. Must have had him at LT for the last game as well but I didn't see that one.

Either way, he did flash a lot initially. We'll see if they have any interest. He might be worth the contract it would take, but maybe not the pick.

There was one play down by the Eagles 10 yd line where he not only pancaked Reddick, it looked like he was trying to drive him through the center of the earth to China.

I don't recall if he was playing RT or LT that game. I just remember on the replays of Hutchinson getting after Rodgers that Nijman was the one attempting to block him on a few of those plays anyway.

Why would the Bengals sign him? They haven’t even gotten to the Burrow/Chase deals yet and tying up a bunch of cap space in OBJ is going to make that even harder. Plus there’s no way they can outbid Chicago.

ESPN blames Wylie's low rankings on Mahomes holding the ball too long and always looking to escape.

Yeah, if he's only going for money he's going to be a Bear. He is perfect for their offense and I'm sure they will be all in on him.

I wish they had a ranking for how much Mahomes does to make the line look better by evading the rushers that get through the tackles! Could you imagine Mahomes behind those monster lines we had in the past? He def holds the ball a while but he’s a playmaker, and that’s what it takes.

Who was that? Also the field, scheme and Mahomes being who he is had a ton to do with that. The SB was fool's gold and anyone who wants to sign them for more than they are worth are welcome to it as long as that team is not KC. I have zero issues bringing Brown back, but that has to be at what KC thinks he's worth, not what he thinks he's worth.

Nope. You pay more for those players whose production can't be replaced in FA (at a lower cost) and the draft.
