Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.

Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

That would mean the Chiefs could potentially be looking at three compensatory 3rd round picks next year if they play their cards right. Think about it like this, what would you rather have: OBJ @$23-24 million a year with $80 guaranteed, or Donovan Smith @$15-16 million a year with $40 guaranteed AND a 3rd round pick? That's really the comparison we should be making when letting OBJ go. It should absolutely play into our decision.

I think Cook and Reid are locked in as starting safeties next year, so you find a veteran looking for a ring who someone let go of. You keep Deon Bush and you of course use a mid-round pick on one. Then you also get that 3rd for Thornhill.

Basically 3 extra picks for guys who are, in the Chiefs world, pretty expendable. We really have a shot to keep playing our 4D chess game if they make the right moves.

Plenty of ammo to move up to 20 for a LTOTF.

A lot of this is gonna depend on if the OT's get pushed up or not. I don't think the Chiefs want to trade away a 1 and a 2.

In 893 pass blocks snaps, Orlando gave up 4 sacks and 58 pressures…and Orlando did so as a left tackle with Nijman at mostly RT.

I think you can somewhat discount the sack comparison because Mahomes is so hard to sack.

Pressure rate is probably more telling. RT VS LT is a thing but pass rushers will line up anywhere any more.

Not that I know anything about Nijman or want him one way or the other but he does seem like a potential candidate given where things are at.

I think trading next year's two to move up makes a ton of sense when you look at the sheer volume of picks the chiefs are likely to have next year.

One of the big knocks on Aaron's game this year was that he totally stopped using his legs. Not only did he not run the ball, he just didn't try to really even move around in the pocket.

Maybe he'll find a new sense of motivation with the Jets, but I doubt it. He will still make them a legit playoff team, though. I personally would love to see an Aaron vs Pat matchup in the tournament. That would be sweet.

Just the couple games I watched of GB, he looked like he had heavy legs. His days of scrambling around are pretty much done at this point.

Yeah.

I should be really clear-I don't think Nijman is Willie Roaf. I think he's a serviceable, decent, middle of the road dependable type LT that will be a LOT cheaper than Brown, who is relatively the same level player, although a very different type of skillset.

If it's a dramatic IMPROVEMENT at the position, and not just VALUE, then you have to buckle up, draft a guy in the first (probably with a move up) and cross your fingers.

There isn't an obvious UPGRADE in free agency.
