RULES

Spoiler!

1. 12 hours for each pick. Unless it's on the weekends.....then your clock can go **** itself.

2. Make sure that you have PMs turned on. After you make your selection, PM the next person up to let them know that they're on the clock. If you know that you aren't going to be on and able to make your selection, PM a list of your desired picks (in the order you want them) to someone else. You can send those to me, or some other poster you trust. Make sure the person who selects before you knows who to alert when your team is on the clock. If you miss your pick, you will be skipped and you'll have to make your pick as soon as you can. If you miss two consecutive picks, you lose your teams.

3. Format your selections as such: *Insert team name* selects Player Name, POS, School. Make sure they are bolded so that people can see them. You can add pictures and explanations if you'd like but they aren't required.

4. Do a search of the thread before you pick to make sure that the player hasn't been selected. If you pick a player that has already been drafted, you face the wrath of the entire thread and you'll have to correct it. So don't make a pick and then leave for 14 hours. Stick around and make sure that you didn't **** up.

5. I and everybody else who help operate this mock try to keep up on NFL offseason news while the draft is in session. We input the comp picks, and we're usually good about adjusting the order for any blockbuster trades that may occur where the previously made picks aren't affected, but sometimes we miss things. It may be a good idea to keep up-to-date on your team's offseason moves regarding their supply of draft picks and let us know if stuff comes up so we can make the changes to the draft order. No, in the end, the true order will likely not be 100% perfect or accurate, but shit happens when you do mocks a month before a draft starts.

Board was in fine and plenty reasonably realistic shape. But you went with the RB convert and immediately started playing 'smartest guy in the room' when you got your balls busted.

My take on this is that generally, people have researched players more that actually might be Chiefs next year, so the positions of actual need for the Chiefs get way over drafted and it makes whoever has the Chiefs job almost impossible.

This is the problem with this mock draft and why it's never a realistic tool to figure out what we COULD draft. Players either get overdrafted because people love them for the Chiefs or there will be times that players fall because people want the Chiefs to be able to grab them.

I'm not bitching about DE because the Chiefs need one, hell there are plenty to draft this year and I can get one. As I said, there are a few I'm plenty happy with sitting there yet and the chances all 3 are gone at 63 are slim. And it could very well be the group of players and the situation (not taking DE at 31) the Chiefs end up in.

I am complaining because it's not me who's getting screwed or whoever mocks for the Chiefs each year. It's simply not a competition to see who can out-draft the other guy with the best players. If it is, this is my last year. It should be to put some level of thought into what teams have done in the offseason (which is why this shouldn't start until at least after the 1st week of FA), gauge their current and near-future needs beyond just the primary standout need, and draft accordingly with the best players at the right times.

I do think you're right that there were a couple more head-scratchers than normal so far this year (Brian Branch being one you already noted that stood out to me). I also think in the last few years, there has been much less "consensus" and trying to work out what is realistic is actually pretty hard.

This draft has never been realistic, but I don't think people are trying to out draft each other. Probably a lot of people are just drafting either off the limited mainstream draft content they consume each year, purely from the college ball they personally watched, or with a heavy bias towards research they have done/seen for potential Chiefs draft selections.

Have you ever sat down with a couple of beers, a big board and a mock draft simulator on the slowest possible setting that also allows trades, and just spent 2 hours on a single simulation? You strike me as someone who would enjoy that much more than this community effort, it will definitely be more realistic.

After picking / getting assigned my teams, I take a deep dive into their top 2-3 fan forums (draft forums/boards) to get a pulse on what they think they need / players they like. Following that, I’ll read their beat writer’s mock drafts and draft needs articles across the various publications and websites.

Once I’ve done these two things I create a working word document to manage my draft. At the top, I have “team needs” that list the top positional needs as identified by various outlets (ex: TDN, PFN, SI, fan forums, etc.). I tend to find that individually these top needs lists are flawed, but when you put 5+ side by side you can get a pretty good picture. I then list out prospects by round that I feel meet these needs. I typically populate 1-2 rounds in advance - I don’t list all 7 rounds at the start of the draft. I scratch names off as they are taken… and then add/modify in bulk on weekends as needed.

I zero in on one player and then panic when he gets taken right before me. Then I try and do all of the shit you just said but in the timespan of about 5-10 minutes.
