The worst neighborhood I ever lived in was Albany Park in Chicago, about 30 years ago. I lived in a nice apartment and I had good roommates, but the neighborhood was shit show. Latin Kings territory. Some of the highlights included:
Running gun battle down the alley behind the building one night. Three distinct guns being fired - one was probably a .22, one was a 9mm, and the other was a .45. So it sounded like pop pop pop boom boom boom BABOOM BABOOM BABOOM. One of the combatants got hit and started screaming shit in Spanish. They moved down the alley and eventually we couldn't hear it anymore. I forgot to securely close the back door after taking out the trash, and later I heard some asshole rummaging around in the kitchen at the back of the apartment. I charged down the hall, grabbed my roommate's gun and headed toward the kitchen. The guy ran either when he heard me running or racking the slide on the pistol. Never did see him. Almost certainly one of my scumbag neighbors. I wasn't exactly chummy with them. Got mugged one night coming home from a nearby bar by three gangbangers, one of whom I knew. Of course I was staggering drunk, white and alone; I might as well have been wearing a neon sign that said MUG ME. Got really lucky that night - even drunk and outnumbered I fought back, and a cop happened by and stopped them before they did any real damage. I figure an extended stay at the hospital would have been the best outcome had he not been there. Knocked the shit out of another gangbanger after the prick took my smokes and lighter in a bar. He went home to get his gun and was apparently planning to kill me, but the bouncer was also in the gang and a friend of mine and stopped him. But the best one was when some guy got his brains blown out at 6:00 on a Tuesday night, right across the street. I worked ten minutes late and got home at 6:10. They took the body away but never cleaned up the aftermath. For days there was blood and brains in the grass. Eventually snow covered it. After that, I decided it was time to move. And of course, this was on the north side of the city, and would be a picnic compared to shit that happens on the west and south sides. I didn't hear gunshots daily but at least weekly. **** Chicago. Zach should move there. |

People going over 10 MPH over the speed limit can use another lane to switch. Not my problem.

I mean generally its correct though. The high crime areas are almost always drug or gang related and vs people that know each other. Yes randoms are also more prone to violence to some degree but in general if you arent bothering anybody youll be fine.

Yeah, go somewhere else. Chicago sucks.
I'll never understand why people go there, especially those who live in other cities. Don't you already have enough nasty urban shit in your life without going to another city that's even worse? Go to Black Hills. Beautiful country and the only danger you'll be in is from hitting a deer. |

I literally anticipated this response the instant I clicked 'submit reply.'
![]() GF loves big cities though and we have free lodging. It would be fun to eat local and take in a Cubs game for me.

I know that since I worked downtown a lot of restaurants and businesses dependent on foot traffic have closed. There were also a lot of places that never recovered from two rounds of riots. I honestly don't know what's still open anymore. Haven't been to a game at Wrigley in probably eight or nine years. The Loop used to be nice and relatively safe. From what I've heard that's not the case anymore. Bums are more desperate and aggressive because there are fewer people on the streets. And crime is up everywhere, even on the Mag Mile. Sounds like it's more like Seattle now. And what's still open will be expensive as ****. I'm 35 miles from the city and gas here is back up to $4.00 a gallon. It's generally at least a dollar higher a gallon in Chicago, if not worse. Prices on everything are sky high. Plan on getting robbed even if you don't get robbed. Maybe check with KCUnited. I believe he still lives there. I just don't know if any information I give you would still be good. My favorite major attractions are the Museum of Science and Industry and the Shedd Aquarium. I assume they're both still there. |

A friend of mine once gave me great advice, "don't sweat the small stuff."
I try to remember this every time some jerk off on the road angers me and tempts me to flip them off and escalate the situation. Even if they deserve it, the right move is to let it go. |
