I'm not so sure, I think it's somewhat calculable:

With Mahomes, the Chiefs are the best team ever.

Without Mahomes, the Chiefs are reheated dog shit that would struggle to make the playoffs, let alone win a playoff game.

Totally off the point but why would anyone heat dog shit once, much less reheat it again later?

Andy Reid’s worst season with the Chiefs was 9-7. The only time he’s missed the playoffs here. He’s never finished worse than 2nd in the division.

The team is still talented enough to grab a wildcard. Winning in the playoffs depends on the draw, but wouldn’t be likely.

Chargers would almost certainly take the division.

Also, without Mahomes, the Chiefs have better draft picks and more cap space.

All you have to do is compare the before and after playoff records. Case closed.

Reid's only playoff victory in KC before Mahomes was against the Hoyer-led Texans, which barely counts.

Reid or no Reid, without Mahomes the team is mediocre at best.

You aren’t winning in the playoffs without a high level QB. We know that all too well.

I’m just saying Reid with this roster is probably still winning 9 games. He’s that good of a coach. The roster itself is pretty solid across the board.

Which is why the 3.5-4.5 WAR seems right.

An Alex Smith gives you 1 and a first round playoff exit.

Danna and Wharton are probably pretty average.

Plus, we likely need to change a lot of what we do on defense to manufacture pressure in other ways which creates voids elsewhere. It’s just a lot more pressure on the rest of the defense and other blind spots created, and that’s not something that WAR is going to be good at capturing.

I think it’s insane to feel like having him or, say, some combination of Danna/Wharton is nearly immaterial to our end of season record.
This is it. We'll win a lot of games without him but he is the "force multiplier" on D people love to talk about, and really the only one. Him being out isn't completely inconsequential
