I really think Veach is trying to give Jones everything he can to the limit of coming across as overpaying. He offers top DT market money at $24.66M and to try to get it done offers to make most of it guaranteed for him which other DT contracts don’t have.

It’s not totally comparable to the Q Williams contract in terms of guaranteed money. That contract included a big bump in year 1 vs what he would’ve gotten otherwise and then has 3 additional years plus an option for another year on top of that. CJ is essentially being offered to bump up this year by 5mm when 20mm has already been guaranteed and then an additional 2 guaranteed years on top of that.

This would take him through his age 31 season. He just turned 29 and has been very healthy throughout his career.

I can understand Jones wanting to get more and I hope the 2 sides come to an agreement to meet in the middle.

This seems more than reasonable. I would also imagine because we are up against the cap this season there is an adjustment on this year's salary to free up some cap space.

Sure. Basically, they would be giving him a three-year, $74M deal that starts now. This year, he’s due $19.5M in base salary. They would then give him $27.25 in each of 2024 and 2025.

So the new money is two years, $54.5M

I believe he played more snaps than any defensive tackle in the game last season (or it’s close) and more than most edge rushers as well.
