Lots of information below, but Jason Fitzgerald from Overthecap.com believes that the offer from the Chiefs for $74,500,000 - $19,500,000 for current contract gives you $55,000,000 of new money. That gives you $27,500,000 per year and would be a fair contract offer.

Chris Jones contract from 2020 when Chris was 26 years old.
Kansas City Chiefs DT (2020 contract) Chris Jones (4-yr, 80.0M) AAV:$20M, Age 26, total guaranteed $58,500,000
2020 - $15,001,000 cap hit, 2021 - $ $8,541,666, 2022 - $29,415,666 cap hit, 2023 - $ $28,291,668

Quote:
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Chiefs have offered to replace the $19.5 million that Jones is due to earn in 2023 with $74 million over the next three years. Of that amount, $70 million would be guaranteed for injury, with a lower amount fully guaranteed...
Jones would take $84.5 million over three.
https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profoo...t-aaron-donald

From Overthecap.com
Quote:
The thing with contracts that often leads to the most confusion in the NFL is the concept of how to value a contract extension. A contract extension is typically valued based on the “new money” in a contract. The calculation is simple. Add up all of the money in the contract and subtract from that the money that is owed to the player on his current contract and then you have the new money in the deal. Divide that by the number of new years and you come up with the average per year on the contract.
Quote:
The $74.5 million offer works out to $24.8 million a year, but if we value this as new money, it represents an offer from the Chiefs worth $55 million in new money over two new years, an average of $27.5 million. That number is a “cleaner” figure than the $74.5 million which certainly leads me to believe the Chiefs are taking a traditional approach to the contract valuation. The $84.5 million that Florio says is the magic number would lead to a new money total of $65 million, or $32.5 million a season, which would blow away any other extension for a non-QB and fly past Donald’s number.
https://overthecap.com/thoughts-on-t...to-chris-jones

Other DT contract to compare to -
Washington Commanders DT Daron Payne (4-yr, $90.0M) AAV:$22.5M, Age 26, total guaranteed $60,020,000
2023 - $8,610,000 cap hit, 2024 - $21,610,000 cap hit, 2025 - $26,170,000 cap hit, 2026 - $28,010,000, cap hit, 2027 - void year with $5,600,000 Bonus

New York Giants DT Dexter Lawrence (5-yr, 90.0M) AAV:$22.5M, Age 26, total guaranteed $59,000,000
2023 - $6,653,000 cap hit, 2024 - $21,900,000 cap hit, 2025 - $21,400,000 cap hit, 2026 - $24,400,000 cap hit, 2027 - $26,400,000 cap hit

Tennessee Titans DT Jeffery Simmons (5-yr, 94.0M) AAV:$23.5M, Age 26, total guaranteed $59,330,000
2023 - $6,350,588 cap hit, 2024 - $21,800,000 cap hit, 2025 - $22,800,000 cap hit, 2026 - $25,473,000, 2027 - $28,300,000 cap hit

New York Jets DT Quinnen Williams (5-yr, 96.0M) AAV:$24M, Age 26, total guaranteed $66,000,000
2023 - $6,464,588 cap hit, 2024 - $20,400,000, 2025 - $21,650,000 cap hit, 2026 - $26,650,000, 2027 - $30,400,000, plus two void years with no money.

Los Angeles Ram Aaron Donald AAV:$31.67M, Age 32, total guaranteed $65,000,000
2022 - $27,000,000 cap hit. 2023 - $26,000,000 cap hit, 2024 - $34,166,666 cap hit, 2025 - $29,333,334 (void year), 2026 - $8,000,000 Bonus on another void year. Rams will be paying for Aaron two years after he is no longer on roster.

I hope this will be resolved soon, but I am afraid the Chiefs will have to add a void year on a new Chris Jones contract to make the numbers work.

Example of possible contract - (Disclaimer: not saying this would be the contract)

Kansas City Chiefs DT Chris Jones (3-yr, 74.5M) AAV:$24.8M, Age 29, total guaranteed $70,000,000
2023 - $16,500,000 cap hit, 2024 - $19,500,000 cap hit, 2025 - $28,500,000 cap hit, 2026 - $10,000,000 cap hit (void year). Chiefs would pay Chris one year after he is no longer on roster.

This. He simply isn’t anywhere good enough to be paid like some other DT and his age is an objective fact. I never thought we’d be having this conversation right after SB 57 but I would have preferred we traded him asap knowing what I know now.

And he’s my favorite defensive player but it is what it is only Mahomes gets what he wants.

The funny thing about it is it would have made way more sense for someone like Tyreek hill to have done this over Jones. Mahomes has shown he can win with almost no defense, so it doesn’t make sense to have DT be the end all be all for Mahomes. The kind of Money Jones evidently wants would be better spent on a WR1

I’m aware they’re not interested in doing that I’m just saying

TJ Watt makes $28 mil/yr
Joey Bosa makes $27 mil/yr

You could argue that he's as valuable or even more valuable than either of those guys. He's damn sure more important to the overall play of the defense and has way more double teams and around the same amount of pressures. ****ing Nick Bosa is gonna get more than Donald, so I'd say the market definitely says he's worth. $27-$28 should more than get it done.

Question here

Let’s say Chris sits out and Defense plays no worse without him. I know people are saying franchise tag and all that but what if we just parted with him?

What would you guys use that extra cash on? If anything at all right away?

Also just so you guys know I love football but I’m a total noob when it comes to contracts and franchise tag, trades etc etc. So I apologize if the questions sometimes sound very ignorant. I started watching Football about 7-8 years ago and I know the rules of the game but I’m not a know it all on the money stuff like a lot of you.

Chiefs offered star DT Chris Jones to replace the $19.5 million he's due to earn in 2023 with $74 million over the next three years, per Mike Florio.

According to the report, of that amount, $70 million would be guaranteed for injury, with a lower amount fully guaranteed.

#Rams Aaron Donald's deal is 3-year $95 million, so offering $74M isn't exactly close to it.

Chirs Jones would take $84.5 million over three years, per Florio, if the Chiefs were to offer that.

This framing is bullshit, extensions are aways valued at the new money average. We aren't talking about a new 3 year deal, we're taking about a 2 year extension.

In a way this makes the holdout make more sense, if the whole crux of the argument is whether the existing contract should count or not. It's basically the Chiefs saying "we're not going to ignore your existing contract" and Jones saying "OH YEAH? I'LL SHOW YOU!"
