Brett Veach hopes Chris Jones can play next week; increased talks last 2 days

#Chiefs GM Brett Veach says he's hopeful that DT Chris Jones will play in their season opener vs. the Lions, which is just eight days away.

No I’m talking about just the standard elevation rule they use. Each player they elevate they add one more inactive. So after the game the elevated player goes back on the PS. They can only do that 3 times with each PS member over the course of the regular season

Already missed 1/18th of his salary for 2023. Already missed a 500k workout bonus.

Cruising for missing 2/18th of his salary for 2023.

So, base salary down to 17.3M. Franchise tag for 2024 down to 31.5M.

Say Chiefs win, so he decides to hold out against the Jaguars, too.

Base salary down to 16.25. Franchise tag down to 30M.

Say Chiefs win, he decides to report, finally. If I'm KC, I probably hold him out and withold the game check for Bears week, too. Just to drive a stake into this tactic always and forever.

Now, he's down to 15.2/29.

I just don't think that scenario scares the Chiefs all that much. Every regular season game he sits out just increases their leverage and position, unless the Ls start rolling in.

Just depends on who it is. Shelton only got elevated once last year but that had more to do with his cardio and weight which is both improved this year.

This is gonna be awesome when Mahomes redasses his way to 500 yds and 5 tds in the first two games. A guy like Mahomes...this just amps him up and he wants to be great even more.

As long as he’s healthy and active. He has that hip issue. Sounds like everyone is practicing though so that’s a good sign. He was an ILB in Wisconsins 3-4 and his college highlights were so fun to watch him rush and crash head on with the interior OL and fullbacks. He was tossing plenty of guys around 50 lbs bigger than him. He should be able to chuck a RB or TE aside coming off the edge his share of the time but he’s not a put his hand in the dirt type imo

Use a couple of our big guys as NTs alongside Karlaftis to anchor against the run, and then go with human wave blitz assaults on passes. I like it. Can we call it the Human Wave Defense?

Yeah, I think a 3-3-5 is going to be seen at times, for sure. I don't think KC has the DL to run an odd front as base package or standard package (without Jones and Omenihu, the Es aren't beefy enough), but it can be a wrinkle for sure.

The Lions are a gap scheme team, which is great against light fronts that don't blitz. I could see the Chiefs mixing in enough blitzes to cause some problems.

Biggest thing is that Goff just isn't the same guy on the road that he's been at home as a Lion, even in 2021.

Detroit will put up points, but it doesn't have the D to handle the Chiefs' combination of Mahomes magic + Reid scheme wizardry + OL strength.

I get that Jones' last real card to play is "try to win without me and see how it goes!" but I just don't see that going where he wants it to go.
