Whether it seems disingenuous to you or not, it’s how teams and players think about their contracts.

When Williams and Simmons and everyone else signed their extensions off their rookie deals, did we talk about their AAV in terms of the total deal including the last year of their rookie deals, or did we talk about the new money only (it was the latter, because that makes it higher).

Same thing with Hill and the Dolphins.

Everyone reports on the new money, unless they’re being disingenuous and trying to spin a narrative. See: Florio, Mike.

Yup, this.

Simmons' cap hit is 6.35mm this year. It's then 44.6mm over the following 2 years (and then the dead cap drops a ton and they could very easily cut him if he fell off a cliff).

Williams' cap hit is 6.43mm this year. It's then 42.05mm over the following 2 years (and then also has dead cap dropping a ton).

Excluding his restructure bonus, Chris Jones' cap hit is 20mm this year. The Chiers offer of 74mm including this year is equivalent to 20mm/27.25mm/27.25mm. That 54mm (27.25 * 2) in new money is substantially more than these other guys.

He's absolutely being offered a reasonable deal and there was no reason to think back in March that he wouldn't accept this (especially in light of where the Simmons/Williams deals settled).

And I say this as someone who is generally an advocate for players being paid their worth…

But Jones and his agents are being unreasonable, negotiating in bad faith, and I have no sympathy for career earnings lost or negative repercussions from it.

The Chiefs are not a team you need to play hardball with.

But Jones and his team had to try to have their cake (the big deal they want) and eat it too (stay on the Chiefs).

Choose one.

Stay with the Chiefs on a deal that IS huge and pats you like you claimed you wanted.

Or get more than Aaron Donald on your new years.

Most likely (and this is me guessing) all parties were waiting for the other DTs to resign before talking final numbers. I think Jones always wanted to be the #2 DT and perhaps his camp thought Williams would sign for more than he did. This changed the leverage they had some as Veach could have made him the second highest paid DT, but closer to Williams. I could easily see them hoping that when Williams signed, he would get $27-$29 million which would allow them to get roughly what they were asking for.

I just don’t see Veach holding on to Jones if he knew that Jones was looking for $30 million a year when he could have traded him (which goes against what Veach typically does).

It's the Money or Legacy line of thinking Tyreek employed - on one hand, Hill made 30 mil last year and lived on South Beach. On the other hand, Hill and his team were bounced in the wild card round and watched the team that drafted him with their generational QB win another championship and enter the conversation of being the next dynasty team.

So far, Jones seems to be choosing poorly when placed in the same scenario, because I think our GM has shown he's not shy about ultimately doing right by the team in these situations of contract talks for superstars. We'll see.
