Offensive Tackles

I'm not going to overreact as it's only been 2 games but boy has their play has been meh at best. I'm not too worried about Taylor as I am Smith who looked like a declining player in Tampa. Everyone says it was because he was injured and maybe he still is but this has to get better if we're going to repeat as champs

Not completely sure, but I think he should have went forward and that would have given the Chiefs another chance to convert on 3rd down.
If he catches it and fumbles, can the Jags decline the penalty and take the turnover?

It's an automatic loss of down in the NFL

I think so.

I remember that Thursday night game 2 or 3 years ago when Dolphins beat the Ravens. That OL made that crazy run after catch and made it across goal line and the Ravens had to accept the penalty and give Dolphins another down.

I am pretty sure if there is a turnover, the defense can decline the penalty and keep the ball.

Was the rule changed after that Dolphins OL made it across goal line against Ravens on TNF a couple of years ago?

Hmmm that's interesting. Looking it up, it says it's a loss of down but yeah you're right, they repeated the down that game.

That was my biggest concern when he caught it. A Jag easily could’ve punched that ball out.

Whatever is happening here, is something that is happening to this whole OLine imo. That, or there is something chemistry wise that is off.

He is a much better OT than he has played the last 2 weeks. Coaching should fix this. Give it a little time.
Uhm, no. You're misunderstanding.

The 'false start' thing is not being called for 'false starts.' It's getting off the line so quickly that it looks like a false start and everyone is concerned that it's going to be called a false start.

The point is that he's been using this quick get off his entire career and that's allowed him to be as effective as he's been. If now he can't do that, presumably his performance will suffer and he won't be the 20mm/yr-ish tackle we signed him to be.

That's the concern.

Jaguars sure miss Jawaan Taylor at RT.

His replacement was beat by every Chief that lined up against him.

I think Taylor will be fine. Smith is going to be frustrating to watch. He doesn't try and disguise his holds at all when he's beaten. He'll just grab on for dear life.

Got ya. When someone says 'The false start thing' I tend to think they're equating to how his lineup causes false starts, considering he's had 3 in 2 weeks.

A few thoughts:

1.) Assuming that one facet of his game is what allowed him to be as good as he is is a bit misleading. Its only one facet of a very complex position. I'm sure even if he changed it up with coaching, he'd still be a great pass blocker.

2.) When his chemistry settles in it'll be better. Getting snap time down to the precise point with his style of play on a new team with limited preseason snaps can make the transition difficult for some guys. I would much rather perfect that chemistry now so he's best later.

3.) Like most things in the NFL, people will freak out for a few weeks, and then by Week 6 no-one other than us will be talking about this because there will be some other thing to freak out about that the NFL will want referees focus on.

Its been a bad 2 weeks; it'll get better. If this is still happening by Week 8, I will happily rescind all of this and say we have a huge problem on our hands, but adjustments will be made, and well be fine.

Yeah, they might forget about it until the next Sunday night matchup we have. Then Chris ****ing Collingsworthless can flap his gums constantly about it to remind everyone. I'm sure him being a former Bengal has nothing to do with it, or him OWNING pff if I read that correctly, that is based in O****ingHIO. GMAFB

Just have to clean up penalties. We are going to have an elite pass blocking line. Trey needs to clean up though.

Yeah, the tackles seem fine to me.

I think Trey Smith is a bit overrated in these parts. He's a good solid player, but not someone that you would really need to extend.

“Need” being the key word.

If it’s a reasonable number, sure. Don’t overpay for that player with that positional value.
