The Chiefs are discussing a contract extension with L'Jarius Sneed

Per Jeremy Fowler's locked article below

McDuffie is that guy. He was vital in the Bengals AFCCG. I'd argue Bolton is viewed by the team as that too.

Karlaftis and Rice could be on their way. They both have potential

That's not what people want though.

Don't most CPers want Chris Jones gone?

No. They don't want to lose a ton of talent or the opportunity to improve at the cost of keeping one guy who wants to break the bank.

Most teams, including the Chiefs, are up against that cap every year. So the extra money going to top players isn't affecting the owners in the lear. They're spending that money anyway. The ones being affected are the blue collar type guys that are contributing every week. Those guys are taking less because the stars are taking most of what is available. Don't get me wrong. I want to see Sneed get paid. But I don't think that he's going to have trouble taking care of his family if he gets $10M per year instead of $18M per year. But if we pay him $18M, who is going to have to lose their job because there's not enough money left?
He's a 4th round pick, who' has played on a cheap contract for 4 years.

He should get the most money he can in the next contract, it may be his only time to cash in.

It's not his job to determine who gets paid and who doesn't, that's the GM.

There was another guy on the defense that was vital in that game, that you don't care to keep around.

I'd guess the team views him as that as well.

Chris Jones is one of the 3 Elite, HOF players on the roster.

The other HOF player was traded.

If you don't want to sign your best players to instead fill the roster out with guys that are good but not special, just say that's what you want to do.

If you want to fill out your roster with guys like Dan Sorensen because you're paying most of your cap for two or three guys just say so.

And you are in even more of a world of pain if one of those three high paid guys becomes day to day or loses his spirit.

I don't want to not have Chris Jones.

But I understand that Mahomes on two legs plus the best 52 is probably the best shot at winning it all in any and all seasons.

Chris turns 30 next year and averages 9 sacks a year outside of money years where he's trying to get paid. He's kn pace for 10 sacks this year and I'd argue last year was his peak and a steady decline is coming soon.

Is 10 sacks a year worth a $30 million anchor? Him and Mahomes alone are just under 30% of this years cap. That's with Mahomes still being cheap.

Keep in mind Mahomes cap hit jumps $20 million from $37 million to $57 million. Even if the cap moves up, Mahomes is still gonna account for 20% of the cap by himself. Now add Chris and his massive contract which would likely make it over 30% of the cap on 2 guys.

Not ideal to do that for a depreciating asset when you can trade that asset and use the assets gained to get a shiny new WR in the first rd and have money left over to keep building the team.

Not if you just turn off the salary cap like in Madden.

In my amateur opinion, Jones makes the entire DL function just by being on the field. Does Sneed do the same for the DBs? I don't see it. I like Sneed as a player, but he's no unicorn.

I think there's a lot of Madden and fantasy football guys on the board.

They're not gonna be able to tag and trade him. The time to have traded him was last offseason. It's either a new contract, or more likely, he hits the market.
