It's hard to remember now but when people tuned into sportscenter, even the biggest game outside of the playoffs only got 5 minutes of coverage maybe. They really tried to get every game mentioned and when there are 50 games in a night you can't just focus on one. Of course there were no first take contrarian type shows, no social media to add to the fire. Jordan was "everywhere", but compared to today he probably got mentioned, to the average fan, 80-90% less than Mahomes or Lebron does in any given week. Add in that back then you only got a few games televised a week and what choice do you have? Cheer for the team that's always on TV and wins or try and hate them? For the majority of people it was easier to just cheer for them and have them as your second favorite team or whatever. Now you can ignore the chiefs and watch your favorite team and hate on them from afar. It's just a different experience as a fan now than what it was in Jordan's time. One other thing that I also haven't seen mentioned in this thread is gambling. I think that's also having a big impact on people. I would guess there are lots of people who gamble on the chiefs to lose because "well they can't win every time right?" just like black rolled six straight times on a roulette wheel has to be red eventually right? Or they hate the chiefs and think they are overrated and so they bet against them and now they hate them even more because they are losing money. And they lose and now everything is a conspiracy against them and they would have won money if it wasn't for X Y Z calls. |
