The Kansas City Chiefs could be saying goodbye to one of their defensive stars.

The Chiefs have granted cornerback L'Jarius Sneed permission to seek a trade, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday. Rapoport added the Chiefs could elect to use their franchise tag on Sneed ahead of next Tuesday's deadline and then trade the fourth-year defensive back.

If Kansas City does indeed tag Sneed by the March 5 deadline, the organization will have until mid-July to either lock him into a larger extension or presumably make good on its word and trade him. The one-year franchise tag for cornerbacks is set at $19.8 million for the 2024 season.

The 2020 fourth-rounder has blossomed into a stud for the Chiefs during his rookie contract, developing a reputation for sticky coverage with 10 interceptions, 40 passes defensed, four forced fumbles and 6.5 sacks in his career.

Teams are sure to come calling, but they'll have to compete with the K.C.'s negotiating power and the lure of sticking it out with the team that drafted him to make a run at a Super Bowl three-peat.

If medicals on Sneeds knees check out, there is no reason the team shouldn’t expect a high 2.

I saw an interesting trade idea, Sneed for Pittman Jr. I'd do that. Then we draft a reciever and we're stacked at the position for years.

Nothing but feel good stuff. If he’s not signed before FA starts I don’t see it happening. He held the team hostage last year, they’ll probably just go shopping with his money this year.

My guess is that we have an offer we’d accept for Sneed, but we won’t pull the trigger until the deal with Jones is done.

If the deal with Jones can’t get done, then we’ll extend Sneed instead (unless we get blown away with an offer).

Chris was never going to sign before hitting FA.

Veach will try to get him back, but Chris will need to show that he’s actually willing to leave and convince teams he’s legitimately looking for a deal to sign with them and that they aren’t being used to get a better deal from KC.

Sneed will get traded for a 2 and a 4 and we will get CJ95 re-signed for 5/150. Possibly less aav, but I think that’s the basic outline that will be sold as “I was offered more by more than one team, but I want to finish what we started!” Kinda thing.

We should also get at least 1 5th round comp from last offseason…and possibly 2.

He’s literally the only NFL player in history to ever miss time with a minor knee injury. Seems like a red flag.
