RIP Ricky Henderson

'Man of Steal' Dies

Wow, a legend passes at only 65.

Major League Baseball legend Rickey Henderson died Friday at age 65. Known as the "Man of Steal," the Hall of Famer holds the all-time stolen base record with 1,406 and runs scored with 2,295, and was widely considered the greatest leadoff hitter in baseball history.

Henderson ended his 25-season career in 2003 after playing for nine teams—the longest tenure with his hometown team, the Oakland A's. In that time, Henderson won two World Series titles: his first with the A's in 1989 and his second with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1993. Henderson also held the all-time record for walks (2,190) before Barry Bonds surpassed him in 2004. He was a 10-time All-Star and became a first-ballot Hall of Famer in 2009.

Henderson was also known for his style and eccentricity, often celebrating home runs with a signature jersey tug or finger dance.

RIP Rickey. You were a great one.

Was a footnote for my favorite baseball player of all time, Nolan Ryan.
Rickey was Nolan's 5000 strikeout victim.

Oops, sorry. I missed the other thread and found it.

I remember hating him, but he was an incredible talent.

Former Mets GM Steve Phillips said on MLB Network Radio on Sunday that Rickey Henderson didn't know him by his name, would just refer to him as "hey GM".

Phillips said Henderson wanted the Mets to do something special for him in 1999 when he reached the all-time runs record and all-time walks record.

Phillips said the Mets would have a pregame ceremony and present him with some tiffany. Henderson replied, "Who's Tiffany?"

Phillips said it's made of crystal. Henderson asked, "who's Crystal?"

When Henderson understood what Phillips and the Mets wanted to do for him, he wasn't interested. Phillips asked what he wanted.

Henderson wanted the Mets to get him a Madden cruiser lol

He was the guy who framed a million-dollar check, right? I think it was him. He got a huge paycheck and thought the check was ceremonial, so he framed it. The team eventually called and asked why he hadn't cashed it.

Here’s another story:

When Henderson joined the, I think it was the Mariners, he noticed John Olerud wore a helmet instead of a hat in the field. Ricky approached Olerud and said “I played with a guy last year who did the same thing” to which Olerud replied “yeah Ricky, that was me. We were teammates on the Mets last year”

Lol
