I waited until it showed up on NFL network, but I realize most can't do that without spoilers.

The quality was YouTube TV as always with being able to FF through commercials.
Yeah, they're hoping people will be too forgetful or lazy to cancel the subscription. I made sure to cancel it right when the game was over, but I still have access to Netflix for 30 days. We got the Ravens & Texans game on our local CBS because we're in the Houston market.

Beyonce was the #1 trending topic on Twitter for basically the rest of the night. Not the Chiefs or Ravens or anything else. It definitely made a splash.

The real question is going to be when some of these TV rights come up. Are they going to try and steal games from CBS/FOX/NBC? If they can get regular games that guarantees 4-5 months of subscriptions from people. And the NFL would love it because it's a global audience for their game in one place.

But the question isn't really the number of Netflix streamers. It is how many new subscribers.

I mean sure, you want to keep current subscribers happy. But if they got those numbers almost entirely from existing base versus signing up a bunch of new people.
We'll never know, but at their scale it doesn't take much to justify it. Their cheapest tier is $7 for a month. Let's assume that half of those who signed up for this drop after a month, then half of those drop the next month, etc. That works out to an expected value of somewhere around $14 per sign up (and that's being conservative since many of their plans are more than that).

That means they'd need to get around 4 million people to sign up to justify $60m for it. They have around 284 million subscribers worldwide according to a quick search, so that's around 1.4% of a bump - not too tough to imagine.

Obviously this is all just back of the napkin stuff. You could argue that's too high, as I used the lowest subscription tier. In addition, preventing attrition has the same effect as gaining a subscriber.

On the other hand, I'm using the worldwide numbers, and it's unlikely that her appeal is as high in other countries.

But anyway, having worked closely with a data science department at a scalable business, I guarantee they've run all sorts of models to predict the ROI of such an investment. Could they be wrong? Sure. But Netflix is VERY good at making money.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Not with advertising sold. 25m viewers this year will likely bring in $1m+ ad rates next year. This year was an investment.

Come on, bro. Do you feel like you’ve cracked the code by canceling your subscription immediately? Did they not budget for people like you when considering these events?

I didn't watch it, but I'm also not going to pretend that I understand global marketing better than Netflix (or baselessly suggest money laundering). THAT would be truly stupid.

I didn't say I cracked any code. I canceled it as soon as the game was over because I don't want to forget about the subscription and be charged on January 24-25. I don't need Netflix and don't want to get charged $7.50 next month. Got plenty of other content distracting me.
