Elon Musk's new 5th form of transportation. The Hyperloop.

All That We Know About Musk's Hyperloop: The Infographic

http://jalopnik.com/all-that-we-know...hic-1066973247

As we've all heard by now Elon Musk, un-contented with running an electric car company and a spaceship company, will be announcing plans for a 30-minute round trip LA to SF transit system. Luckily, someone has shared this lovely infographic with us showing everything we know so far.

And what we know so far isn't really all that much: Musk says it's not a tube with a pure vacuum in it, it could be powered entirely by solar panels and even generate electricity, and it's sort of a "cross between a Concorde and a railgun and an air hockey table," which coincidentally is exactly what my drawings for my future home's rec room included back when I was six.

The actual details should be revealed on Monday, so those of you creating scale models in your backyards shouldn't have to wait too much longer. And while Musk now says he's too busy to build it himself (come on! Just skip your Tuesday night hot yoga class, man) I'm still hoping this thing actually will get built, so I can finally get looked down upon by San Franciscans in 30 minutes instead of the usual 5 hours by car.

Info graphic is huge but worth expanding and checking out.

That’s definitely an “I’ll believe it when I see it”. You can’t fly from Pueblo to Denver (ignoring take off and landing) in 11 minutes. Not a clue how something ground based will do that.

If it can reach speeds around what a commercial jet cruises then it could get there in about that time frame.

Still wondering about that. I know that flying from Colorado Springs to Denver is more than 11 minutes not counting take off and landing. Now perhaps if they are referring to the most northern possible point and still be considered Pueblo and the farthest southern possible point and be Denver it might be possible.

I really liked the shinkansen in Japan and the Dutch fast trains were pretty nice too. They are building a bullet train in TX but it won't be as convenient since it is not going downtown to downtown between Houston and Dallas.

One of the most challenging aspects of any sort of mass transit development in the modern age is all the stuff that's in the way. In order to get stations in the most convenient locations, you usually have to destroy a ton of existing structures (houses, buildings, roads, etc.). Denver recently expanded tons of rail lines out into the burbs, but the stations are largely in places everyone has to drive to since they built them along existing freight rail lines.

I definitely think it’s very generous to say that short of time. It looks like the distance is about 115 miles by car. I’d assume the rail would be maybe a little less. If it goes around 550 mph the whole time it could about make that time, but there’s obviously no way it goes 0-550 in such a short time frame. Honestly seems unlikely it would ever move that fast and still have time to slow down on such a short trip.

True. Plus I would be curious to see if there is any effect on people going that speed at ground level. I know we don’t really notice it in an aircraft, but it’s also pressurized. Now it might not make any difference at all.

I'd recommend staying FAR away from airplanes, if that's the case.
