I don’t think it’s that dumb. Thuney only has a couple years left. Trey Smith is the younger player.

You can’t have 3 expensive IOL players. Two is even a stretch.

At least they’re getting something for him.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I kinda felt bad for him.

For all the reasons you’re hesitant to extend them, other teams are hesitant to trade for them.

Thanks Joe! Always hate losing a player, even if it’s the right move.

Actually a pretty affordable set up and draft win.

I'm still upset that we traded Tony Gonzalez for only a 2nd. Which we ultimately didn't translate into shit while he had many good years still in Atlanta.

Thuney was only going to play in KC for another year at most though. I wish you could get something better than a 4th for one of the best lineman in football, but that's the market. Teams tend to overvalue picks these days even though everyone knows most 4th round picks don't play more than a few seasons in the league.

I get his age and contract being an issue but at the same time he was our best OLineman all year and you trade him for a pick next year? 2 of our Super Bowl beat down's our OL got killed and you go franchise tag one of the biggest culprits?

I should wait and see what other moves they make but right now I am perplexed.

I’m shocked at the number of people who seem surprised by this.

How is anyone surprised anymore when Veach trades guys who are coming off great years?

It’s these moves in conjunction with nailing subsequent draft picks that give you a shot to remain a step ahead of an always tough AFC and now AFCW.

Thuney is 7 years older than Smith and the Chiefs desperately need a LT. We'd all like for the Chiefs to spend way over the cap, but they can't, so, you have to pick your spots. The money we'd be paying Thuney is now being paid to Smith as we shift a rookie contract guy into Thuney's old spot.

Getting younger on the O-line helps to keep Patrick protected for years to come. Moving a 2nd year player into the LG spot saves a lot of money off the cap. Finally, trading Thuney gets us some draft capital for next year in the same way that trading Sneed to the Titans last year got us some draft capital for this year. When you're constantly at the end of every round, getting extra draft capital is a must.

I really like Thuney and wish we could have kept him, but teams are forced to make moves like these because players want to get paid as much as possible. It's nobody's fault. It's just the business.

He's won 4 Super Bowls and will be paid more money than any of us can dream of in Chicago, even for one season. He'll be fine. It's a big market and they at least have a chance to make the playoffs like most teams. Not like he's been traded to the CFL.

Maybe I’m wishcasting, but does it seem like these three moves taken together add up?

1) Save $16 mil in cap space from Thuney
2) Save cap space by letting Reid walk
3) Move Kingsley to LT

=

Invest in a high priced LT? I don’t see what else the money could be used for other than maybe an edge rusher or a WR, but the latter seems out of step given we’ve got Worthy/Rice.
