They didn’t. It’s all about minimizing risk. Especially in the early part of round 1. The Chiefs are in a position to take risks.

If Simmons busts, not big deal, he was taken at 32 and Veach and Andy are at no risk of losing their jobs.

If Simmons was taken top 10 and busts, some GM might lose his job.

This.

The Chiefs made the Super Bowl last year with Jack and Shit at LT. There's very little risk here - CEH and FAU are recent examples. If he flames out, they're still a contender.

If he pans out, though they're THE contender.

When you're picking near last every year and you need a LT, this is the kind of move you make.

Apart from the obvious "They already selected a tackle and/or they already had a good one on the roster" they're picking in the top 31, man. Their teams are worse than ours.

Simmons was a risk. A bit of a big one. The teams at the bottom don't have the capacity to use their first round picks (which are far more valuable than ours) on rolls of the dice to fill a position like LT when there might be so many other holes on their rosters.

Eventually, they'll run out of rope though. Need the first rounders to hit as it just makes the margins tougher.

I think I agree here, but on the flip side, if he's as good of a T prospect as some here are telling me, why would teams not roll the dice on him at LT since that spot is so tough to find?

Its a smart gamble, considering we don't NEED him to play next season.. love the way they built the roster as insurance for such a risk (if there is a risk)

I keep saying it but KC won back to back SBs with Brown Jr and Donovan Smith at LT and they made a third SB which no other team has done with a combo of Wanya/Kingsley/Thuney at LT. They don’t need Joe Thomas at LT, they just need at minimum Brown Jr level LT play. Anything above that is gravy.

Out of the 31 other teams, many did not need to take a LT. There were only a certain number of teams that were in the market, or might have been. Of those teams, most were not in a position to take a risk because they had lots of ground to make up if they had any hopes of making the SB. Of the few teams that remained, only the Chiefs had the right mix of need, opportunity, and willingness to take the risk.

Bc the Chiefs have the job security and risk tolerance to do this and most other teams don’t.

Most of the teams in the top 15 are first or second year coaches who can’t afford to take the risk bc they have to start producing results this year. Other teams like the Giants have coaches are on the hot seat and know they’re probably getting fired if they don’t take a big jump.

Teams like the Chargers/Broncos/Ravens already have good bookend tackles signed long term and didn’t even need a tackle.

Then teams like the Texans and Packers have QB’s who are about to get extremely expensive with little results and are not gonna risk wasting a critical year on a guy some folks think should redshirt.

Another recent one is KU basketball player Elmarko Jackson, who missed last year with a torn patellar tendon. His rehab has gone well and he's expected back this season. It will be telling whether he regained the athleticism that made him a McDonald's All-American.

Correct, but as long as they continue to hit at the rate they do in rounds 2-7 the rope stays long.

If he's the prospect I'm led to believe by CP, why wouldn't they take said risk?

Over which player? The picks in the first round were all deserving from the many mocks and analysis articles I've read. Why take a first round risk when the team can select a player with no health issues that will make an immediate impact?

The Chiefs are one of the few teams that NEEDED to take that risk. So they did -- simple as that. It doesn't mean the Chiefs are stupid and the other teams are brilliant. Maybe it works; maybe it doesn't. But at such a position of extreme need the Chiefs believed it worth the risk. I hope the Chiefs are right.

LT, especially one of his caliber, would be of higher value than other positions, no?
