These bands are hard to compare side by side. It's apples and oranges. Steely Dan was by design a studio band. Becker and bundle of sticksan used a lot of jazz influence, heavy on sax and horn arrangements, funky fusion bass lines, complex song writing, a thinking man's band. Fleetwood Mac was a blend of British Influence and American West Coast Rock, and because of the nature of their music are a better live band, classic "Arena Rockers." That's why you can't go more than about 15 minutes without hearing one of their songs on a formula "classic rock" station. Their early stuff was great, but didn't get the massive airplay like the Stevie Nicks era music. Stevie Nicks has no septum left. Just a big Hoover vacuum sized slot under her eyeballs. She's a mess. |

I'll go with Steely Dan over and over and over, and twice on Sundays. There is no contest here. Steely Dan has written some of the best music ever to be recorded in a studio, and they are the ONLY Rock n' Roll band to seemlessly fuse jazz and rock and have it sound damn good.
Plus, I'v seen Steely Dan in concert, and they were fantastic. As for Fleetwood Mac, I like them too, but they are much more of pop-rock genre. That is, they sound good and sold alot of albums. Both are great bands, but IMO, Steely Dan rules. I still listen to my Steely Dan CDs all the time, whereas I just listen to the radio if I want to here some Mac...
