Gunther on Surtain

“The most important thing about Patrick Surtain is that he’s a tremendous cover guy. He comes up with the ball and he gets turnovers. He fits the mold of James Hasty or a Dale Carter in terms of his coverage skills. He’s a playmaker. He brings an attitude and intensity to our secondary. Opposing teams are going to know that he’s out there and are going to have to account for him. Hopefully his leadership will inspire confidence in the rest of our defensive backs and the rest of our defense.

“The number one priority for our defense in the off-season was to add explosion. When the Kansas City Chiefs were a force on defense, you could the feel the explosion and you could see the turnovers. Sammy Knight and Patrick Surtain have proven they can take the ball away. Kendrell Bell gives us the ability to have a blitzing linebacker who can wreak havoc on the quarterback in the passing game. Carlos Hall does the same thing. He can close fast on the quarterback or the ball carrier. To me, the work that Carl (Peterson), Denny (Thum), Coach Vermeil and the entire organization has put in has been tremendous. They developed a plan and the plan was followed. We targeted specific players and we’ve added four players to our defense who I consider to be playmakers.”

That is a better analogy, but wouldn't it be more like:

I wish I had been given this car before I walked all the way KC to LA on a broken ankle.

There are two ifs - IF we can stay healthy, and IF someone at OLB will step up, then we could make some serious noise in the AFC.

That was my point. The past 4 years have smacked my enthus-o-meter around so much that I'm like a beaten puppy scared to take the tasty treat from a friendly hand. Could've used some of these quality personnel moves back when my fandom was a little less battered.

I totally agree with you. But Carl finally pulled his head out of his ass this year. I'm pretty happy about it.

We may have a shitty season again next year, but it won't be for lack of trying.

Now we need a stud DE.
