GOLFERS: What's in your bag?

I am an admitted "club slut". I'm always buying, selling, and trading equipment. Naptown is the only one here that I know of that is as bad or worse than I am about this addiction. Just curious what's in your bag...

It's a simplified swing, uses a baseball grip and is all upper body. The grip is a lot fatter with no tapper.

Yeah - I read a little of it. I'm guessing Penick is rolling over in his grave. Everything about it seems to go against everything I've learned about golf. Heh.

For the past 2 months though, I can't hit shit. Nothing. I'm a lefty aall of a sudden every tee shot I hit goes directly right. Today, I almost hit some guys on a green that was directly to my right. No matter what iron I hit.

I've played high school basketball, and Amercan Legion baseball. I was a pretty decent athlete. But JFC this game gets in your f'n head.

I came home from today from our usual Sunday round and threw my clubs in the front yard.

F' it.

But Will what it sounds like is what is said before. You are trying to hard. Heck those of us who have played awhile even goes through sperts like this. Don't press go out and not keep score just tee it up and enjoy the good shots. When those happen try to remember how you did it and try to repeat it.

Think of it this way if you hit everyball straight you don't get to practice those shots that legends are made of. Those 125 yard PW sliced under the tree, glancing off the bridge, over the pond onto the greem 10 feet from the hole.

Also if you hit in the fairway all the time you only see a minimum of the course being in the woods, traps, wading in the stream usally has better views of the surrounding areas. And atleast you feel you get your moneys worth.

Yesterday, I played an uneven 18 without really keeping score, mainly just knocking the ball around with my family (probably shot around a 97 or so on a course I really should be getting sub-90s on). I did knock the shit out of a few drives. None were pretty draws or anything, but I'll take a 310 low controlled fade/slice ending up just right of the green on a short par 4 anyday. (Just about fell out of my shoes on that one!)

I get plenty of practice like that. I'd love to hit out of the fairway for a change.

Heck, I've grown to prefer the rough. I don't know how to hit the ball off the fairway anymore.

Yeah, but wouldn't it be nice to try once in a while?

I'll be back out there. But it's a much better game when you have a little confidence. Mine is shot.

As much time as I've spent off the fairway this season I could write articles for the Audubon Society.

I'm becoming quite the naturalist.

I do this regularly. Some of the most fun rounds are when I didnt keep score. Then there are times I start out fully intent on keeping score and after the 3rd hole, the scorecard is in the trash.

One thing I'd like to do this year is consistently break 90. I was on a streak of low-mid 80's a couple of years ago, but Ive gone back to 91-94 each time out. It's typically one blow up hole on each 9 that gets me.

SR,

Thanks for the advice. I've done exactly that over the last week. Slowed down the swing. Used just the SW, PW and 9 iron.
Concentrated on just making contact. Then moved to the longer irons. In a week I'm making better contact.

Today, I used that swing and brought out the 3 Wood and gave it some full swings. Drove the shiot out of the ball off the deck. Hit about 20 that went right down the pipe at about 180 - 200 with a touch of a fade. (Just like before.)

Confidence is coming back.

Thanks for the tip.

Well, William, don't go getting all encouraged. That's the way golf is. It lets you hit just enough good shots to keep you coming back. Then it all goes to hell again.

That has to be the truest statement ever.

I will not forget it.
