Lowered expectations!

Sadly I had already accepted our offense was going to be significantly diminished this season because of Herm. However, even my lowered expectations were not set to handle the loss of Roaf to retirement. I now feel we will be fortunate to finish .500 but that this gives us the chance to start rebuilding our offense. I think we should consider asking Will Shields and Priest to go ahead and retire opening up roster space for some projects. We should also have some scouts out (if possible) looking for prospect that might be cut worth pursuing.

So what are your thoughts on the best way to start rebuilding?

The linemen we do have have all been here beffore this year so they should be able to play. As good as a Pro Bowler like Roaf? Prolly not but I don't think we'll have a total collapse on the left side. We do still have Waters at LG so I think we'll be O.K.

It's not necessary (though nice) to have a Pro-Bowl left tackle to run an effective offense. Again, the Chiefs are still fielding 11 guys (not 10) and 6 weeks of work before the first game should give them plenty of time to get a suitable left tackle ready to start the season.

I agree with you but the following quote from Herm shows he believes in Martyball not Maul ball.
Quote:
EDWARDS: “Just in different scenarios in the game, we’re going to play the game a little differently. The game will dictate who we play and how we play. I’m not saying we’re going to just exclusively run the ball, but if you look at us last year we threw about 523 passes and ran the ball about 505 times, somewhere in that vicinity. I anticipate if we’re playing with a lead, we’re going to run the ball more than we did last year and not worry about continuing to try and get a 17 point lead. I think at times when you’re in games, especially on the road, you have to be able to run the ball if you’re going to win on the road in a hostile environment. That’s how you take care of your opponents. When you go on the road, you run the ball and control the clock. I think we have a great offensive line, we’ve got a heck of a running back and there’s going to be times when we need to pound it a little bit more.”

Uh, dude. Willie Roaf is as big as 2 players and worth 3 on offense. He's the MVP of the team. I think the assessment is correct. We're in BIG trouble!

Running the ball with the lead does not equal Martyball. Jeez.

I think everyone missed the important part of that quote, read the part in red that is Martyball:

True.

But if you're not continuing the effort to score while running the ball to control the clock, that is the very definition of Martyball.
