I didn't say they were the kings of Christian metal, just rock. They had a sort of cheesy 80s sound, but they really opened the door for a lot of bands who came after. Without Petra there wouldn't have been a Stryper or a White Cross.

It was the cheese factor that brought about the . My first thought was "these guys remind me of Night Ranger, just not as good".

I know Petra had "harder" (as in 80's rock sounding) songs, and opened the door for Stryper to hit mainstream. Not questioning their talents, just laughing at the uber-cheese vid.

Stryper. Heh. I remember when Robert Sweet claimed he was a virgin and planned on remaining that way until marriage. Even in my naive teenage years, the first thing I thought when I heard that was "bull-shit"! Heh.

If a friend of mine is to be believed, none of them were virgins. She used to work as a hooker (before she turned her life around) at a brothel in Springfield. I forget the name of the place, but it was out on either east Division or east Kearney, and there was another similar place called Scorpio's right next to it. Anyway, she said all four of them came in there one night after they did a show at Hammond Center. She actually managed to get photos of two of them when they weren't looking, and the guys in the photo looked a lot like Oz Fox and Tim Gaines, though I couldn't tell for sure if it was actually them. But according to her, all four of them visited the place ... and they weren't there to witness, at least not the kind of "witnessing" you would expect. That's one band that I never did buy the whole Christian schtick.

Did you know the lead vocalist John Schlitt was in Head East before Petra?They had one major FM hit with Never Been Any Reason.

Yeah, I knew that. And their producer, John Elefante, was lead singer for Kansas for awhile (he's the one who sang "Fight Fire with Fire" and "Play the Game Tonight"). Of Petra's singers, though, I prefer Greg X. Volz to John Schlitt.
