England: Motorists 'must pay for road use'

Traveling in England this week.

People are in an uproar over new tax proposal.

Over 1.1MM people have registered with the official website site, yet government officials are moving forward. Apparently 28 billion pounds a year revenue is too tempting to resist. They hide behind road congestion and global warming.

Shows how scary government greed is.....just like the USA tobacco settlements were supposed to go to prevention of smoking but ended up paying for government pet projects.

Small, vocal green groups approve. Of course. most of them don't have jobs or cars, so it doesn't impact them.

The socialist world is a scary, scary place.

Motorists 'must pay for road use'

Ministers say congestion could rise by 25% by 2015
Motorists should be asked to pay to drive on the nation's road network, a report commissioned by the government has recommended.
Former British Airways chief Sir Rod Eddington has examined options for modernising the UK transport network.

He has reported that road tolls could benefit the economy to the tune of £28bn a year.

With road charging, drivers would pay more to use roads when they were busy or more congested.

If road charging was introduced, the government would be able to examine the option of whether it could raise enough revenue to replace fuel duty and the car tax disc.

I heard a story about the uproar over this on the radio a couple of days ago - apparently some people are taking it worse than others. Some mail bombs have been sent to toll collecting agencies. So far, they've been non-lethal, but people are getting hurt.

This is why I'm saving my money to buy a helicopter. You can go anywhere, anytime. Just park it outside arrowhead, fly out, beat the traffic. Can't beat that.

they will put a little box in your cars tracking where and when you drive.

You will pay for all road travel. Right now you don't.

Revenue will not be used for intended purpose.

Less government the better.

Reports commissioned by the government say so. Clearly indicative of actual British governmental policy.

They already have congestion laws in London where you have to be special in order to drive, so they should have seen it coming for major highways.

On that same note, I wish we had stop lights like London, where they go from red to yellow to green. People might think twice about that yellow arrow if oncoming traffic has a rolling start. (it's scary if you're a pedestrian though)

pay for driving on the roads? shit that's how it is in major US cities.
You can't go anywhere in Dallas without paying tolls, stayed down there with a friend for a week and spent anywhere from $2 to $5 every day.

I wonder how many people here realize there’s a “road tax” attached to the price of every gallon of gas they pump into their vehicles.

I am a huge believer in Toll roads. The only people who pay the toll are people who use the road and you can set toll in accordance with highway dameage...ie Semis pay a lot more than a car

Well, we are talking about a country that charges you a TV tax every year to pay for the BBC.

If there’s a way to tax it, the Brits will figure it out.
