KC Roster – Sharing Numbers

I assume when they bring in college free agents that they just assign them a number. Most of them won’t make the team anyways, so no big deal. They don’t double assign numbers of the better players though.

When you are a Chief sharing jersey numbers with someone else on the team, it means you are very low on the team hierarchy. Number assignments indicate Derrick Ross, Marcus Maxey, Jon McGraw, Tre Stallings, Rudy Niswanger, and Will Svitek are going to have to work their butts off to make the team.

I was in hopes that Svitek and Niswanger could get some playing time this year and show what they can do. I though maybe Maxey or Bragg might be the 4th or 5th corner. I projected Jon McGraw as our third safety. I also thought Derrick Ross might become our 3rd back. All of those things might happen, but if number assignments mean anything, they are going to have to fight for a position.

34 Brackenridge, Tyron CB
34 Smith, Kolby RB

38 O'Keith, Marcus RB
38 Bragg, Michael CB

39 Ross, Derrick RB
39 Patterson, Dimitri CB

45 Maxey, Marcus CB
45 Murphy, Wes TE

47 McGraw, Jon S
47 Allan, Michael TE

48 Butler, Robb S
48 Willis, Keith TE

61 Stallings, Tre T
61 Heard, Michael DE

64 Niswanger, Rudy C
64 Harris, Chris DE

65 McGlothlin, Matt DT
65 Taylor, Herb T

66 Batiste, George T
66 Crum, Brian LB

71 Svitek, Will T

I don't understand what your saying by if number assignments mean anything they're going to have to fight for the position? The numbers are obviously assigned to a defensive and offensive player to avoid confusion now, but that's about it. Once guys are cut numbers can change, unless someone would rather walk than change numbers?

That means shit. They have to give them SOMEONE'S number. If you've seen our numbers for backup Oline, you'll know we don't have much. Niswanger and Svitek make the squad no matter what barring injury or putting up Kevin Sampson-like vaginaness. So will Stallings. And Kolby Smith. Everyone else should start applying at Walmart.

If Marcus Maxey becomes anything more than a special teams contributor I'll be shocked out of my mind. That guy is horrible, IMO. Just bad. I'm surprised the Chiefs brought him back from Chicago.

As a wannabe member of the media last year, I attended the weekend rookie camp on credentials. The guy was just horrible. I mean, he was the worst DB of the entire bunch and there were a lot of DB's there who are currently sacking groceries.

At the rookie camp? Could it have been nerves or ignorance as opposed to stupidity and/ or lack of talent?

I think they should assign each position a number. The starter wears the number. The backup is A and the third string is B (i.e. 27, 27A, 27B). Whadduya think?

Yes, I know. LAME. But it sure would help simple minded people like me know who's on the field!

Generally, I can tell if a guy is an athlete by watching him move,.... running, jumping, and catching a ball. I'm no professional scout, by any means, but he just didn't look all there for me. Maybe it was nerves - who knows? You think if he's nervous in front of 50 dudes his age, a handful of coaches, and some of the media that he'll die of fright in front of 70k?

Maxey can run and that's about it, IMO.

It means they are what they are. They are low round or free college free agent players. Respected veteran players and high round draft picks do not share numbers with other players. I know they are limited numbers and they do these double numbers with defensive and offensive players. Look at the entire roster though and tell me it is a sign of respect when you share a number with another player.

Can you think of a time when starting players shared numbers?

I don't think it means much at this point. It looks like they just ran out of numbers. Those players sharing numbers play on opposite sides of the ball so it's probably just a way for the coaches to keep the players straight.
