This is his first year as THE backup QB. Last year he wasn't getting any snaps with the first team offense. This year he will continue to get some practice with the first team throughout the season and will be much more involved in meetings and on game day. It's not a bad progression, really. From 3rd string, to backup, to starter sometime through the season.
