The Right Thing.

Its occured to me, that often this time of year, we, as individuals and families are wrapped up in things like football games, playoff hopes, hanging plastic on our windows, Christmas shopping and any plethora of Things in our daily grind. Most of them, are of little significance in the big picture.

I'm not exactly sure why I'm compelled to make this post, but I am.

This winter, as the temperature drops below zero outside my home, and as I celebrate a win over the hated Donkeys, some dose of reality is sinking in that needs to be said.

This Christmas season, there are alot of things we can do, as individuals just because they are "the right thing" to do.

This year I encourage those of you who can to find someone they can help. There are alot of kids without proper coats, shoes and clothes in poor condition. I wish I could direct you to specific places, but can't right now. If you have the time, the finances and the same kick in the craw that I do, please contact your local school, or a charity program, or a food bank, and see what you can do to help get a kid in a proper pair of shoes, a warm enough coat, and maybe some toys for Christmas.
I know that many churches, school nurses/administrators, as well as local govt programs will be able to give lists "boy, age 12, size 9 shoe, likes football" type lists.

For those without the financial availability to help someone in that capacity....there are Still alot of things you can do. Scoop the snow off the walk for that old widow across the street, take the son of a deployed, wounded or KIA soldier to the Y to play some ball...do something.

Another option, I'm going to quote from the Michael Yon website, because I think its very true, and something you, and your children can do for less than $.50. Write a letter, have your kid draw a picture...whatever. I know, that during the holidays, many of our deployed men and women are having a tough time.

"More than 150,000 troops are at war in Iraq, Afghanistan and stationed other places by land and sea. It's time to remember them, and at least send a letter. Care packages are great, but simple letters can be powerful. The Department of Defense has sorted through endless websites and charities, and does an excellent job organizing links to sites that allow people to help the troops. With a single click, people can donate books to troops, or computers, or frequent flier miles, or they can help wounded veterans or grieving families, or Iraqi children. There are so many options. http://www.americasupportsyou.mil/ "

As an individual, we can all make someone's holiday brighter with very little effort. As a Group of Chief fans, think of the combined good we can do, but each doing one small gesture, that is "the right thing".

I know for sure the planet has pitched in and sent me great items that I sent to a unit in Iraq last year....several members gave and gave great stuff.

This time of year, I'm all about coats, hats, mittens and boots/shoes.....last week, at work I heard of 2 infants/toddler brought to a daycare with no coats....and it was below zero windchill.

If the planet found a local need for those items, I'd think a combined effort would do wonders.

If some trustworthy planeteer stepped forward, I'd be all for finding an elementary school in the KC area...pitching in as a group, having that person purchase gift cards to donate to the counselor/principal anonymously, or in the name of Chiefsplanet and in honor of Lamar Hunt......that counselor would select a family or two in their school and purchase coats et al for them. That would be a great thing......

I guess taking a hint from a link to the Dallas newspaper that Bob Dole posted in one of the threads, we could start a group that could be named The 37 Foundation in honor of Joe Delany and Lamar Hunt (37 was the number he wore). We could find 37 guys who would commit time and effort to spearhead charitable donations that would be administered in KC by a trustworthy planeteer.

Just a though to ponder.....

Maybe its the season
that brings from me the good
Helping those who need it
Feels nice because it should.

I know its not a poop thread
This from the Keyboard of doom
your schedule might be busy
but you can make some room.

You've got some money in your pocket
without it you won't feel the sting
Get off your ass and use it
There's still time to do the right thing.

It's that time of year again!

Bob Dole was going to start his drive-thru tradition at breakfast today, but there was nobody there.

Our annual school delivery was made yesterday.

Good show Bobdole.

I'm traveling more, and will partake in the drive-through gesture each visit through Christmas.

With Shotgun deer season this weekend, we'll soon be dehydrating jerky, some of which will be sent overseas prior to Christmas.

If someone wanted to start a "fund" or what have you from the planet, all we would need is one person who wanted to collect the money, and then disburse it to whatever need it was going to be used for. I think some would be suprised at how many of the members would give. I would give to a "CP Christmas fund", to help some people out, but you always need someone to start it, and seeing as im not in your state and most people don't know me, it wouldn't go over to well if I started it.

Bob Dole has had a couple of people indicate they're going to do the drive-thru thing this year, too. It would be very cool if it took off and branched out and people started doing other random things in the community.

Thanks for posting the original topic!

Tonight, an Ice Storm is pillaging the areas in which many of us live. This will put many people in danger or at least severely burden them.

This, my friends is an opportunity to do the right thing. Tonight, more likely tomorrow, our friends and neighbors are going to need some help.

Last spring, a similar storm started in the area in which we lived, 200 miles from family, and a young child with pneumonia, rsv and ear infection. We lost power for what turned into 3 nights and 4 cold, miserable days. I swalled my pride, for the good of my family and accepted some help from a gracious neighbor. I'll never forget their kindness.

Check on those old folks who won't be able to get out, use that 4x4 to get supplies if needed...offer a hand, or if appropriate your home.

This situation provides an opportunity to do the right thing.

I generally try to do the right thing. I'd like to acknowledge that it's coming back to me now. My business is blowing up beyond belief. People actually TIP me - a home contractor. I was tipped $40 on a $2000 job by a firefighter today and $50 on a $50 bill from some local folks who were experiencing some serious leakage through a window due to an ice dam on their roof and some shoddy patchwork which had been done in the past. When I told the lady $50 she scoffed and told me she was writing the check for whatever she wanted. Heh. $90 tip in one day - to a contractor. Heh heh. Awesome.

It comes back. It might not be tomorrow, next week, next year or even next decade but it will come back and it's coming back for me.

A fortune teller?

Once again, I found my home without heat and power as temperatures plunged. Once again, I found myself in need of a little help, and with more than ample opportunity to help others in worse shape.

I'm glad you're finally getting some of yours back phildo.

CBS Evening News just reported that Secret Santa lives on!

An unknown guy who was a friend of Larry's is carrying on the tradition, branching outside of KC, and intends to give away $75k each year as long as the money holds out.

A known guy who was a friend of Larry's is the former #20. I don't know if he's the one carrying on the tradition but I do know he's participated in the past.

The guy in the shadows during the interview didn't appear to be Deron.

It doesn't look like the video is there yet, but they've added the story since Bob Dole posted.

It looks like we've found a family to adopt. The lady is living in a one bedroom apartment with her MIL, husband, 5 yo, 3 yo, and 6 mo. We're short on cash but long on toys and clothes. I think it's going to be an incredible learning experience for Reese. Hopefully we've found a worthy family. We're going out to meet with them tomorrow.
