Tennessee Titans (JBucc) - C+
The Titans' two jobs this offseason are to lock up Haynesworth and to finally surround poor Vince Young with some semblence of talent, after ripping it mostly away last year. Their first pick was a home run, as long as Jon Stewart stays healthy. He can develop very quickly into a stud RB that can punish you if you key in too much on Young -- it helps to finally have a RB who's a better rusher than your QB. JBucc keeps trying to bail out Young by drafting WR in the second round, which at that point was a reach. Manningham was arguably the best WR left on the board at that time (although I'd say Bennett was), but it wasn't worth the 2nd rounder, not when they need help virtually everywhere else as well. But you can't give Young nothing, so I understand it. Chris Ellis was a fair pick in the third, but like I said, I'm lukewarm on DEs this Draft. Miami Dolphins ('Hamas' Jenkins) - A- Well it's impossible to argue with having the #1 pick in every round. The Dolphins had the best selection spot in the Draft, and appropriately took advantage of it. So much has been said about Gholston, but he is a beast in the making. Carl Nicks is basically a first-rounder anyway, and has the upside to man down the Dolphins LT for a decade. If he continues to progress, he's a Pro Bowler. The Dolphins then treat themselves, perhaps for years, with Avril at the other OLB position to give themselves a potentially All Pro one-two punch with Gholston. Avril might have been a slight reach but Gholston makes this pick worth it. I did not like DeCoud at the top of the third, and I believe that was a reach when the Dolphins need sooooo many positions, but DeCoud is the exception in an otherwise great Draft. New Orleans Saints (OnTheWarpath58) - B The Saints are one of those polka-dotted teams in the need department it seems; in the several places they have needs, they have gigantic gaping needs. Most of them, unsurprisingly, are on defense. This is a defense that needs to get a lot tougher, and OTW did a Grade A job in the first round by selecting Rodgers-Cromartie, without a doubt in my mind the best CB in this Draft. Rodgers has the gifts to become a shutdown, and he's a lot tougher than people give him credit for. DT Pat Sims is, despite his gigantic size, one of those DTs that's capable of playing anywhere from 0-tech to 3-tech if need be, but he's going to specialize as NT in the NFL. Thing is, I just don't think a beefy NT warrants a high 2nd rounder in the 4-3, but Sims' abilities somewhat reduces the reach. TE Dustin Keller, a pure receiving TE, is just what the doctor ordered for the offense, and was a good pick in the 3rd. |

New York Giants (bdeg) - B+
It's been noted that something's nutty about this Draft, as most teams have OL way overvalued and LB way undervalued. The Giants apparently took advantage of this and plucked two gifted LBs at great value. Dan Connor is a locker room leader at LB, and sports enough versatility that he can cover all LB positions. He's the forceful presense you need in the middle of the field and next to Pierce he should flourish. Great pick at the bottom of the 1st. Erin Henderson is the best OLB in this Draft outside of Keith Rivers, and props to bdeg for taking a second linebacker with his second pick (a fairly unusual move). Henderson would have been good value early in the 2nd, and the Giants have a fantastic LB corps. S Tyrell Johnson is the "blah" pick here, a slight reach, especially since Steltz has a bright future at the same exact position. San Diego Chargers (noa) - B- The Chargers didn't have a lot to work with in the first three rounds, seeing how they only had a first. They get pretty darn good value near the bottom of the first in Otah, who has all the tools you need to be a solid RT. The position seems to be the only real hole in the Charger's OL armor, and Otah fills a need while still being great value. Medium-ish grade, though, as only having one pick is... yeah. Philadelphia Eagles (Sandy Limpdick) - D+ I've already canned on Limpdick's efforts here, so let me basically put a lid on all of it. I believe that Sweed, once again, is the second coming of Dwayne Jarrett and was an embarrassing reach for need in the first. MLB Curtis Lofton was a curious choice in the second (even though it wasn't his) as the LB corps in Philly is pretty damn solid already. But you can hardly argue with Lofton's value in the middle of the second, as he has the potential to become something special in the NFL. And then there's the reach for Eric Young in the third, who projects merely as an interior lineman in the NFL. I've never thought Young had the ability to play tackle, but if I'm incredibly surprised and he can all-of-a-sudden fill in at LT, I'll be a fool of epic proportions. As it stands now, Young will ride the bench for at least a year and who knows how he'll turn out. |

Baltimore Ravens (Mr Flopnuts) - D+
I've already had words with Flopnuts in this thread about my bad feelings about his Draft. It starts mostly with drafting Flacco in the second round, when the heart and soul of the Ravens' defense (Ray Lewis) may be in his last season in purple. You need a lot of presense to fill in eventually, and I felt Lofton was picture perfect as Lewis' heir. Nonetheless, the Ravens opted for Flacco, a 6'6" statuesque project with inflated numbers. I was equally disappointed in his first round, as I am nowhere near as high on Leodis McKelvin as the rest of the planet is. I believe McKelvin has the gifts to become truly special in this league, the transition from Troy to the NFL is too perilous to warrant the Top 10. McKelvin is too unproven for me and now he gets to have Lewis and Reed jump down his throat every time they get to the sidelines. Kansas City Chiefs (Mecca) - B+ Considering all the hype that's surrounded this Draft for the Chiefs, Mecca took a fairly unconventional route and in my opinion, it'll pay dividends for the Chiefs. This is, first and foremost, a Herm Edwards team, and you need to have a defense that can carry the offense, whether it needs to or not. The Ellis pick is genius for the obvious reasons, but it's the Groves pick that'll scratch Chiefs fans the wrong way. I like it, as Herm's philosophy dictates that he'd rather wear out one good player than rotate that player with a mediocre player. Throwing Groves in means that Herm doesn't have to play Allen and Hali 50 snaps a game. There's a reason Allen doesn't get sacks in the second half... CB Justin King has a lot of upside if good coaching can siphon off his boneheaded inconsistency. I don't believe he was a reach, but I don't believe he was the right pick, either. New York Jets (PHOG) - B+ The Jets only have two picks in this Draft, and PHOG made the safe, smart picks. Darren McFadden is the perfect ying to Thomas Jones' underwhelming yang, and will take a lot of pressure off whoever it is that's unfortunate enough to line up under center. He'll also have the newly acquired Tony Richardson and Alan Faneca to block for him, so props to PHOG for realizing that this is a team in need of a home run hitter at RB. Devin Thomas was a good pick at the top of the second. There are other choices that I thought they could have benefitted from, but this pick does more to zazz up their lackluster offsense. Thomas isn't the kind of rookie that will make an immediately, Bowe-like splash, but he could come around in a year or maybe late this season. |

Carolina Panthers (chiefscafan) - C+
I've gone back and forth on Brohm, but that internal debate has always been whether he was worth a 1st or a 2nd rounder. The thought never entered my mind that he was worth #13 overall, though. The Panthers reached hardcore for need here, as they are as QB-starved as the Falcons are. But they saw a guy that could be That Guy and leapt for him, unwise as it may have been. There are far too many questions I have about Brohm to agree. It gets better in the second round. ILB Jarod Mayo is one of the most physically gifted defenders in this Draft, and was great value for Carolina in the middle of the 2nd, filling a huge need. I was less impressed with RB Chris Johnson early in the 3rd. It's not that I believe it was a reach, it's that there doesn't seem to be anything about him that demand the Panthers take him when they have the same player. Carolina sees something in him that I don't. DT Dre Moore was fair value in the middle of the 3rd, as the Panthers lost Jenkins and pride themselves on DTs. Denver Broncos (ct) - F The Broncos really didn't make the most of their measly two picks, much to my Chiefs homerism's delight. Kenny Phillips is a sturdy S prospect but he doesn't leap off the page in a way that a Top 15 pick should, especially when Clady was still on the page. Perhaps all the anti-Clady hype got to ct, I'm not sure, but Phillips barely warrants a 1st rounder at all, much less one that freakishly premature. The second pick isn't much better, but it's not nearly as bad. OT Anthony Collins at least sports enough upside to eventually warrant a high pick in the 2nd, but the moon-sized holes in his run-blocking game need to be repaired and their existence should have scared Denver away from Collins with so many needs on defense. Arizona Cardinals (Archie Bunker) - B+ I'm almost tempted to give the Cardinals an A without even examining their 2nd and 3rd. They just acquired a faster, younger Larry Johnson with their first round pick, a large handful of picks after he should have been taken. Rashard Mendenhall will make NFL linebackers sore for several years. 'Zona may finally have a run game that can properly compliment its air attack. Tracy Porter made me cringe a few days ago with his Wonderlic, but he's Top 10 talent at his position. Here's my tagline (it's trademarked, asshole): a rock may not be smart, but it still hurts when it hits you in the head. You're welcome, ChiefsPlanet. He's great value for the Cards in the 2nd. Radovich is really overrated, methinks, and doesn't have much of a ceiling to exploit. I think he was a gigantic reach in the third, but it doesn't negate the two killer deals in the first two rounds. |

fair enough direckshun
I have two boom or bust picks maybe 3 if you add dre moore the two are Brohm and JOhnson brohm maybe a system qb but then again what if he's one of these qbs who comes out of no where . Feeling by the panthers was he would never make it back to us . Chicago, Miami , or the falcons would have taken him before he got back to us. It was too much of a risk. If there is a player you like that you feel can lead your team and make them better sometimes you have to take them even if it is a reach quote in quote. Chris Johnson hmm I know we've gone back and forth on this. Yes he's like Deangelo Williams so I should of got the bruiser RB and where is he gonna play. I say direckshun 4.24 speed. I'm falling in love with combine numbers right? That is what I thought till I saw video on this kid. ONe other guy when I watched him in college did I say damn he has a fifth gear that no one can touch him. That guy was L.T. at TCU who played against about the same caliber talent. Besides I didn't say he was my starter I said he is my KR/PR if he becomes a star even better. Too good of value direckshun he never should have gotten to me in the third. I feel I stole three players and reached for one not bad in the scheme of things. |

Green Bay Packers (crazycoffey) - D
Well, after the Pack have largely rebuilt themselves with stellar drafting over the past few years, they slam into a massive speedbump here. I wasn't crazy about any of the Pack's four selections over the course of this Draft, and I don't even know if more than one of them will see any time in this league. Reggie Smith is the only exception, as the Pack need help in their secondary and Smith can man several positions. Henne at the bottom of the second wasn't that horrendous a pick, as depth was needed. But this soon? And Henne? Hmmm... Highsmith was a mind-boggling pick, taken at least a couple rounds higher than he should have, especially when there are better OLBs with far more promise available -- this group of teams have undervalued OLB and there were better guys available. And Cousins was simply not worth the 3rd rounder. He barely plays OT and is going to need a complete makeover to play in the NFL, and who the hell knows how that'll turn out. The Pack set themselves back with this Draft, but it's possible that good comes out of it. Oakland Raiders (ChiefsCountry) - A- In the Top 10 picks, probably the only thing that rivaled my surprise that Jake Long dropped to the Patriots was Chris Long falling to the Raiders. I sincerely doubt three teams pass on this sure thing, and I'm convinced Long will actually go #1 overall. Nonetheless, ChiefsCountry made the obvious pick at #4 to stop the bleeding, and the Raiders get unbelievable value there. Literally unbelievable, as in I'm incapable of believing it. DT Kentwan Balmer was an equally genius pick in the 2nd round. Balmer is a 1st round quality 3-tech, and as good as he is now, he's got a very high ceiling. They need offensive tackle help but they Balmer is not only BPA, he's also filling in a huge need for the Raiders. Fortunately, they've traded this pick away so this can't happen. They've traded their 3rd away too -- Oakland should just replace Al Davis with ChiefsCountry. Jacksonville Jaguars (pestilenceaf23) - B+ The Jags made safe and smart picks at their first three spots, but none of them blew me away in value. It was a responsible Draft for a team that believes they are but a few pieces away from knocking off the Colts and Patriots for the AFC crown. Jackson was as solid a selection late in the first as any they could have made, and it filled a position of need. S DeJuan Morgan could be considered a slight reach for the Jags in the second, but their secondary was one cornerstone away from being complete, and Morgan might be the final brick in the wall (mixed metaphor, but whatever). Red Bryant in the 3rd is probably as good a pick as they made in this Draft, replacing Stroud with a Bryant who's perfect to play 2-tech in the Jags' 4-3. Bryant should start right away and teams will not have much success running to him. The pick that may cast a shadow over all of these is their selection of QB Josh Johnson late in the third. Now I believe there's a lot to Johnson that mainstream fans of the Draft haven't seen. I think he's a veritable boom-or-bust where his ceiling is silly ridiculous and his downside is real and damning. But I love the gamble pestilenceaf23 took on Johnson, I would have done the same thing -- and I would have done it about 10 slots sooner. Last edited by Direckshun; 03-27-2008 at 12:00 PM.. |

Honestly, I feel like you only reached once, but you only scored on value once with Mayo. Moore and Johnson were taken at about the right places, I'd say. |

Cleveland Browns - I
The Browns had no picks in the first three rounds. They've given them up for Brady Quinn, Corey Williams, and Shaun Rodgers. Worth it? We'll see. Indianapolis Colts (BTAU) - D+ It's easy to forget about the Colts this Draft season, as they missed out on the first round and whenever they pick, it's always quietly scooping up the golden opportunities that the stupid asses above them passed on. That trend seems to have broken in this particular mock, as they reach twice consecutively. Now, Trevor Laws is forgivable, as he seems to be a solid Cover 2 DT. It's not that much of a reach and Laws has a lot of upside. But the reach at the bottom of the 3rd for OLB Geno Hayes was a much bigger reach and I'm not even sure it was a reach for need. He's undersized and fairly fast, so he fits the bill. BTAU treated his picks like casting calls than draft selections, and the Colts may regret that by the end of the year. Cincinnati Bengals (Spicy McHaggis) - A- The Bengals are just a broken organization. I don't know where they're headed or what they're doing, but that's what happens when your team president has been tenured for what seems like an eternity. Things just stop making sense. But this Draft should do the Bengals well, and they should call up McHaggis for personnel decisions. Keith Rivers was an excellent selection to start their Draft, as they got so thin at linebacker last year they moved DEs out-of-position to fill in. Rivers fills one canyon-sized hole, but they've got many others. Well, with their 2nd, the Bengals scoop up TE Martellus Bennett, as promising and athletic a TE as there is in this year's Draft. This gives Carson Palmer yet another great option downfield and Bennett's versatility enables them to run an exponentially larger combination of routes. And though selecting Schuening in the 3rd might have been premature, it's still a gigantic hole of need that will be aptly filled by a capable rookie. I hate to say there's hope for these guys, but with this Draft, it's possible to believe. St. Louis Rams (BigRedChief) - B+ The Rams passing on Long and Long for Dorsey in the first round is unlikely, but it's a fascinating move. Do they keep Carriker inside and have him and Dorsey destroy opposing OLs? Will they move Carriker back outside and finally have a young, unstoppable pass rusher? Variations of both? Nonetheless, Dorsey does seem like a poor choice this early with the injury concerns, but if he's healthy you can't argue with it. Sam Baker is a safe choice for poor Marc Bulger, who got the living hell knocked out of him when Pace went down last year. Baker will play like a seasoned pro and will be one of those guys to sniff the Pro Bowl every year he plays. He's a great pick and this allows Bulger to breathe a little easier. Caldwell is a fair pick for the Rams. Bruce is ageless, but he's slowing down and Holt isn't getting younger either. Caldwell brings some athleticism but he has room to grow -- with two great mentors to help. |
