From my experiences with my own laptops, 512 is somewhat tolerable in XP but if you plan to typically have more than one application open at a time 1gb is pretty needed. With vista 1gb is pretty painful and with how low memory prices are these days if your laptop will take it I would just upgrade to 3-4gb with after market chips.
