His doctors never really considered it life-threatening (maybe its more serious in the elderly?). They tested him for everything from HIV to Leukemia and he didn't have any of it. After a couple months his counts went up and the doctors could never explain it. What I'm trying to say is I'm thinking your GP will be fine...but you have my prayers anyway.
