North east corner of Scotland. Google maps has it. Newtonhill is a few miles south of Portlethen. They are both very close to the sea. We used to go down all the time. One time I fell in the North Sea in the dead of winter. They have a big golf course out by Porthlethen now.

I'm not sure if that's what you are referring to, but perhaps not. I once ate black sand in tenerife on holiday.

Precisely. fucking rocks. I remember our first trip to California after moving to the US.

"Dad, what's this?"

"It's sand, you knob."

We had lots of driftwood and seaweed though. And rope. Lots of rope.

I haven't gone back since we left. But we used to go to the beach all the time. We didn't know any better. It was fun.

One time I found a glowing egg amidst the rocks, and it had a beastie inside. He became my best friend.

There's line that Billy Connolly said once:

50 miles away, oil workers were being told, "This is the North Sea. If you fall in, you'll only have ten minutes before hypothermia sets in and you'll die. At the same time, Scottish mothers were taking the clothes off their kids and saying, "Alright, in ya go."

I wish I could find a WAV or video of that.
