All three of the players you mentioned weren't worthy of the selection, and I'm talking pre-draft. Maybe Stodolka? WTF? Butler, of course. He didn't have a position coming out.

The Royals aren't in this position b/c they were doing things the right way in the draft.

Lubanski was Baseball America's 9th rated player. Butler was arguably a signability pick, but again, his success justifies the pick IMO. My "maybe Stodolka" comment was that he was the last egregious signability pick in the 1st round.

Ok. I understand about Stodolka. Lubanski was a reach at #4, but perhaps not as nasty as others.

Butler's success? Huh? The jury is still out, right? I'd hardly consider anything to be a success yet. Admittedly he's still VERY young and could definitely develop into something.

The fact that he dominated every level in the minors and has had some success in the big leagues at the age of 22 qualifies as a success (so far). We'll see if he builds on it.

Ok. But a 22-year-old DH isn't probably most people's definition of success. That said, I don't understand the organization's negative view of his skills in the field.

I think the guy can be a serviceable first baseman, but why he's not playing there and Gload is unfortunately is an entirely different conversation.
