Royals come to terms with Tim Melville

KANSAS CITY -- The Kansas City Royals today announced they have reached an agreement with fourth-round draft choice Tim Melville. Consistent with team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"We are very pleased to announce the signing of Tim Melville. Tim, his family, and advisor Jason Cook remained committed to this process from start to finish," said Deric Ladnier, Royals Senior Director of Scouting. "Tim is a very talented young man and we are excited that we were able to add a player of his caliber to the Royals organization."

Melville is the 2007 Aflac National High School Player of the Year recipient. The 6'5" right-hander from Wentzville, Mo. finished his senior campaign with an 8-1 record, a 2.56 ERA, and 89 strikeouts in 52 innings. As a junior, Melville compiled a 10-1 mark with a 0.89 ERA which helped Holt High School reach the Missouri Class 4-A finals.

We have until 11pm cst to sign Hosmer and Ryan Curl...glad we got Mellville, considered at the 15th slot in the 1st round but dropped due to signability issues.

I don't know about that. We stopped doing the stupid $1000 dollar bonus crap a few years ago and have been paying slot for guys for a couple-three years now. And there's very little doubt we've tried to overpay for numerous free agents.

This is all true. But I don't know of a previous draft where the team has been willing to go so far above slot in rounds 2 +. I could be wrong, but this seems to be something new for Glass and company.

That was the prevailing thought, but money talks. I wondered if the Yankees would buy him out of his comittment.

Man, I didn't realize the Yankees are now 10.5 games out of first. They have a real uphill battle. They're a lot closer to dropping to 4th behind the Blue Jays than sliding up to 2nd.

I sure hope Boras having to work both Alvarez and Hosmer didn't deter a deal getting done. You have to figure he spent more time on the big name --- Alvarez.
