The Rebuilding Class of 2006

If I did my math correctly 9 teams brought in new coaches in the year 2006.

2005 is the record of the team they inherited.

Team......2005.....2006......2007......2008......Total
Detroit.....5-11.....3-13......7-9........0-3.......10-25
Rams.......6-10.....8-8........3-13......0-3.......11-24
KC..........10-6......9-7.......4-12.......0-3.......13-22
Texans.....2-14.....6-10......8-8........0-2.......14-20
Minn........9-7.......6-10......8-8........1-2.......15-20
NYJ.........4-12.....10-6.......4-12......1-2.......15-20
Buffalo.....5-11.....7-9........7-9........3-0.......17 – 18
NO..........3-13......10-6......7-9........1-2.......18-17
GB...........4-12.....8-8........13-3.......2-1.......23-12

Out of 9 teams only two of them are better than .500 with Buffalo one game off. Although things are horrible in KC, the Chiefs are certainly not alone in their floundering.

So, what is the difference between GB, NO and I'll include Buffalo since they are 3-0 this year, and the rest of the pack? If the Chiefs bring in a new coach how do they make sure that by the year 2011 they aren't part of the bottom of the pack again?

We had a unique situtation in that our rebuild started later - partly because Vermeil retired and was not fired, and partly because of very bad decisions by Carl. We're on a different schedule than those teams.

NO and GB have legit NFL QBs.

Out of the rest only the Rams have a QB who has done anything and he has been bad/hurt for the past 2 years.

Its the QB stupid

Even Buffalo in that time frame has outdrafted us and done better in FA by a huge degree not to mention their 3rd round QB is actually developing.

The Chiefs are the only team that declined each year.[

Assuming your premise is true, that the other teams went for a rebuild right away, then isn't that proof that Herm really sucks since those teams were able to win 6+ games out of the gate during their rebuild?

No team on that list had 10+ rookies on their 45 man active roster at any point. We're going super extreme with youth in a way those teams hadn't. And to me the jury is still out until the second half of the year with Croyle playing.

I don't see the need for the partial scorecard. Everyone loves the Bills now, but what if Lindell misses that kick and they lose at home to the Raiders (with their starter healthy, not with Tyler Thipgen like us)? This story will be written based on which team is playing deep into January consistently over the next 5 years, not after Week 3 of 2008.

Buffalo went 7-9 last year starting a rookie QB with something like 20 players on IR...they literally had half of their starting team as backups or guys that they had to sign that were nobodies and they still went 7-9.

Explain to me how Buffalo went 7-9 with a rookie QB and 20 players on IR.

Ok that's an amusing answer, but either way that shows the difference in the teams.

And yes Buffalo is a good special teams team you know why, they have a coach who actually knows what he's doing.

Special teams has NOTHING to do with coaching. Those guys just run around and try to get to the other side of the field. Psshhh it's all luck baby

Their wins were the following:

Miami twice (1-15)
NY Jets twice (4-12)
Baltimore (5-11)
Cincinnati (7-9)
Washington (9-7)

They were 2-5 at the end of the year when the games that really counted were played. Without special teams, they were a 4 or 5 win team. My guess is they collapse again this year.

We should sign Roscoe Parrish though.

Mike Priefer is Herm's biggest mistake.
