ESPN says Pinkel is a consideration for Washington job
Saw this on ESPN and thought I'd get the Mizzou fans' perspective on it. I know I hate it whenever journalists speculate that Pete Carroll will take whatever NFL job is open.
I pasted the part where they mention Pinkel below http://myespn.go.com/blogs/pac10/0-3...ig-splash.html Posted by ESPN.com's Ted Miller Tyrone Willingham was nearly fired as Washington's coach following the 2007 season, so know that the folks in power -- both inside and outside the university -- have been cogitating about who the Huskies next coach will be for some time. School president Mark Emmert loves his football. He was chancellor at LSU when he bypassed the authority of athletic director Joe Dean, fired coach Gerry DiNardo and lured a guy by the name of Nick Saban away from Michigan State....... Two names would be sweet music to most Huskies fans: Missouri's Gary Pinkel and Seattle Seahawks assistant Jim Mora. Both have ties to Washington and legendary coach Don James. And both would be expensive. Some might wonder why Pinkel, a finalist for the job when Rick Neuheisel was hired after the 1998 season, would leave Missouri after building it into a national power, but more than a few connected folks believe Pinkel could be in play. Of course, the Huskies will have to substantially beat the five-year contract extension that Pinkel signed last December that guarantees him $1.85 million annually. |

But he has been linked to a number of jobs, most recently the Miami Dolphins a couple years ago. |

Herm might actually make a pretty good college coach.
As for Pinkel...meh. I don't think he'll go. If he does, I don't really care. We'll just promote Christianson, who is the true architect of the offense anyway. Pinkel's not much of a head coach, IMO. Maybe we'll get lucky and Pinkel will take Eberfleus with him. |

It's pure speculation. Won't happen.
Maybe if Pinkel was 45 or even 50. But at 56, looking at retirement inside of ten years from now? His wife has stated publicly that he doesn't have the energy for another rebuilding job. So has Pinkel. His mentor, and biggest tie to Washington, Don James, has said Pinkel isn't an option, as recently as a month or so ago. Doesn't mean Pinkel won't use this as a little bit of leverage to get raises for himself and his assistants, though. Washington has better history and similar long-term potential (though it only has one big dog to jump rather than two, that is balanced out by the split conferences), but in the short-term - what Pinkel will look at - it isn't close.

I don't see what the problem is if he does leave. He isn't the brains behind that team anyway.

Like the rest of the media, ESPN isn't reporting news anymore, they try to create it.
Might Washington call Pinkel, sure. But they don't have any evidence at all. ESPN has assembled a list of people that THEY think should be under consideration and report that as fact. It doesn't even rise to the level of rumor. ESPN: TMZ for athletes.

Umm, 12 years is a long time. He's strongly tied to this community and to Don James who is the Godfather of Husky football. Sorry guys, I like Mizzou, but I'm a Dawg through and through. I hope like hell we steal your coach. He was ours first.

COLUMBIA, MO. — When University of Washington coach Tyrone Willingham was fired Monday, effective at season's end, speculation on the school's potential wish list for his replacement naturally included MU coach Gary Pinkel and offensive coordinator Dave Christensen. Pinkel played for highly regarded former Washington coach Don James at Kent State and served as his assistant at Washington for 12 years. Christensen played for James at Washington and also worked for him. Asked Monday to comment on the opening and whether there are implications for himself or Christensen, Pinkel declined and added, "To me, that's just a distraction. I'm going to focus on this football game (against Baylor), and that's all I'm going to do." Christensen declined comment. Earlier this month, James told the Post-Dispatch that he would take Pinkel "in a heartbeat" but didn't expect Pinkel to be enticed by the job because of Missouri's rise, Washington's decline and Pinkel's comfort in Columbia. "I don't know why he'd even want to consider coming out here, with the facilities he's got and the way he's got it going," James said. "I wouldn't know why anybody would want to leave Missouri now." If you're not interested, why not just deny it coach? I'm getting giddy. |
