Wildcat Formation

Do you like or no like?

Seems like almost every team runs a variation of it now.

Will it last? Or just a silly gimmick?

It will last until people realize that playing Cover 1 with the rest of your LBs and DBs in a short zone will stop it.

I think we hired the perfect OC to utilize creativity. I think I'm glad the 'phins showed the nfl that it works. I'm glad herm took the leash off of gailey.

I like when people call it the Wildhog formation better. Just has a better ring to it, and makes it sound more loco. BTW, does anybody know the origin to calling the formation that?

Depends on the expectations. I like it as a straight run, take the qb out all together. The only purpose of a qb on a run play is to sell the potential for a pass, the formation usually gives that away anyway. Wildcat for a called run that picks up 4, 5, or 6 is a success too me. A continual big play threat, not so much.

Gus Malzahn "invented" it during his short career at the University of Arkansas as a way of getting the ball into the hands of McFadden and keeping the ball out of the hands of Casey Dick. They originally called it the Wildcat formation , but it eventually changed to the Wildhog (seeing as we're the Razorbacks/Hogs and all). I think that change came when David Lee came on staff and they began using the formation even more. Lee is now the QB coach at Miami. Presto, the wildhog/wildcat makes its way into the bigs. Here's an article on it:

I think the Arkansas Razorbacks named it the Wildhog formation.

eh, I think it's a gimmick that has legs. with so many college teams running the spread, it would be smart for a team to have a few 'spread' sets and some form of the wildat formation as a wrinkle. I don't think it can be an every down offense, but it's a good 'confusing' look to give the defense.
