End of story: Shanahan is not taking Chief's job

Shanahan is not taking Chief's job

KANSAS CITY - Mike Shanahan may not have a new job after all. After reports surfaced the former Denver Broncos head coach was close to taking the top job with the Kansas City Chiefs, those reporting that have backtracked.

ESPN now reports only that the Chiefs are targeting Shanahan for their head coaching job after the team fired Herm Edwards on Friday. Initially, ESPN reported that a deal was near between the Chiefs and Shanahan.

Edwards was fired after going 15-34 in three seasons. He still had one year left in his original four-year, $12 million contract.

The NFL Network's Adam Schefter, who recently finished writing a book with Shanahan, maintains Shanahan will not be taking the job with the Chiefs and is not considering it.

"They are not near a deal. They are not near a deal right now, they were not near a deal yesterday, they will not be near a deal tomorrow. Mike Shanahan will not be the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs," Schefter told 9NEWS. "All the people in Denver can stop worrying or stop talking about it, it's not happening. I know there have been national reports to the other effect. I'm here to tell you just the opposite, it's not going to happen."

Schefter says he has spoken with Shanahan directly about it.

"I speak to Mike regularly, there has been nothing in his tone or in his message that has given me any indication that he will be the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. I know for a fact they've not had contact to this point. The Chiefs may in fact reach out to him in the coming days and even then I firmly believe it will not change anything," Schefter said.

The Broncos have hired new head coach and former New England Patriots offense coordinator Josh McDaniels to replace Shanahan.

When he was fired, Shanahan still had three years left on his contract, worth about $20 million.

Say in Arrowhead Parking Lot before the 2011 Playoff game versus the Broncos with Shanny on our sidelines.

I'll drink to that Kotter!

Dude Taco used to be like this all the time.

It was so much fun.

Shanny in KC might be enough to get him posting on the main board full time. It's gonna be a hoot!

Maybe we'll get a Cutler > Stafford thread in a few years.

Rumor? Duh....

Makes sense if you think about it. (Don't mean it's true, but it makes sense.)

Fair point and something I hadn't realized. Thank you.

I can't wait for the Kolby Smith/Jamal Charles has "lost his burst" thread....it will be destined for the HOC.

Behind zone-blocking, 1000 yd Anyback OLines, with vasolined jerseys....Smith/Charles are destined for the HOF, Baby!

The timing of everything is weird. Mort comes out and basically says it's a done deal. He isn't going to do that without a strong source. And then to come out later and say a Chiefs official is telling him that Shanahan is targeted but it's unlikely?

And of course the Rat isn't going to tell Adam the Gnome anything if it is supposed to be hushed up for now.

Add in Garcia's story (assuming he wasn't just screwing with us)....

Hell, Schefter may have just been doing Shanny's dirty work for him.

And if Schefta and TJ are butt-buddies, as Anton suggests/validates our suspicions....why the hell wouldn't he???

It's always amusing for me to watch you laugh at your own jokes and pretend that other people are laughing with you. Your scizophrenic insecurity provides great comedy.

Strange observations:

Maybe Pioli did exactly as he said he would do, talk to Edwards and Clark about it until he made a decision. Everyone else has been sure he was making a deal with someone or negotiating. Maybe not, and that would explain what they're saying about Shanahan now --there has been nothing. That would also explain matters with Haley --he's not going to be negotiating with anyone while in the middle of preparing his team for the SB.

Now Pioli has made his decision, and now he has an opening for HC. If Haley really is a candidate you're still not going to see Pioli talking to him until after the SB --the longer we wait now, the likelihood that Haley is it increases. But if someone spots Shanahan in talks with KC now that Herm is gone, look out! I don't care what Schefter says, these guys do play it close to the vest, and no one necessarily knows what the other is doing. Media wants to scoop the story. These coaches and execs want to control it.

I still think Shanahan would take less money from the Chiefs to just run the sidelines in the right situation (read: Pioli-led operation) and cause some mayhem in the AFC West.
