End of story: Shanahan is not taking Chief's job

Shanahan is not taking Chief's job

KANSAS CITY - Mike Shanahan may not have a new job after all. After reports surfaced the former Denver Broncos head coach was close to taking the top job with the Kansas City Chiefs, those reporting that have backtracked.

ESPN now reports only that the Chiefs are targeting Shanahan for their head coaching job after the team fired Herm Edwards on Friday. Initially, ESPN reported that a deal was near between the Chiefs and Shanahan.

Edwards was fired after going 15-34 in three seasons. He still had one year left in his original four-year, $12 million contract.

The NFL Network's Adam Schefter, who recently finished writing a book with Shanahan, maintains Shanahan will not be taking the job with the Chiefs and is not considering it.

"They are not near a deal. They are not near a deal right now, they were not near a deal yesterday, they will not be near a deal tomorrow. Mike Shanahan will not be the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs," Schefter told 9NEWS. "All the people in Denver can stop worrying or stop talking about it, it's not happening. I know there have been national reports to the other effect. I'm here to tell you just the opposite, it's not going to happen."

Schefter says he has spoken with Shanahan directly about it.

"I speak to Mike regularly, there has been nothing in his tone or in his message that has given me any indication that he will be the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. I know for a fact they've not had contact to this point. The Chiefs may in fact reach out to him in the coming days and even then I firmly believe it will not change anything," Schefter said.

The Broncos have hired new head coach and former New England Patriots offense coordinator Josh McDaniels to replace Shanahan.

When he was fired, Shanahan still had three years left on his contract, worth about $20 million.

With the denial being exhibited by Schefter and Teej, I'm beginning to move from "Shanahan wouldn't be too bad a move" to "**** YES, bring on Shanny!"

And of course some of us want Shanahan. He's (a) one of the best available coaches, and (b) hiring him will irritate a lot of rival fans. If the Raiders had just dumped one of their iconic coaches, maybe that guy would merit consideration too. Unfortunately, Lane Kiffin and Art Shell and Bill Callahan aren't walking through that door.

There are sports reporters that will do stories simply to dismiss the rumors.

Did 9News get Shefter's quote wrong? I don't know. I did not look in to it. Most of the time, these types of rumors are used in blogs.

One of the most enjoyable reads on ESPN is written by Obudsman Le Anne Schreiber. She writes a well balanced critical column on ESPN.

In the latest column, "ESPN guilty of teller becoming the tale", by Le Anne Schreiber, she discusses four issues with ESPN in the past few weeks. In "Case 1: Denial," Le Anne calls out Chris Mortensen.

It's this simple...if there was no interest in the job from Shanahan's perspective, he or his agent would've already came out in the media and denied it...just like they did with the Jets job.

I don't give a shit what Schefter says, until I hear a denial from Shanny or his agent, it's clear that he's in play.

I'm not worried about it... if Shanahan were to coach KC, I have 10 years worth of stuff from you guys that says it's a bad move.

I really don't understand why the Bronco fans are so up in arms about Shanahan possibly coming to KC... They just canned his ass. They have a new wonderkin as HC. Unless there is the nagging feeling that if Pioli wants Shanny then, perhaps the Broncos made a mistake? Insecurity? On Shanny's end, it's clear that KC is a desirable location, more so now than before.

I'm certainly not up in arms... I think most people would like to see their former coaches and players not end up on another team within the same division. But, if he were to choose KC, so be it.

I think I would be more annoyed if he chose a place like Dallas (if it were open), but if somehow he landed in KC - that wouldn't drive me crazy.

It's not like any team can just add Shanahan and 3 TSB of water and ... BOOM! Instant Championship!

Shanny is a great coach and he will have success elsewhere, I'd just rather it not be with a team in the division. If he does, oh well.

I like the coaching staff that McDaniels has put together though...

yeah, I think that's about what how I'd feel if the tables are turned. Sounds like Shanahan is not a real option for the Chiefs, so I guess it's moot.
