If you read the article, you'll see that the writer makes a bold point but fails to back it up.
His premise is that making a safe pick is stupid. But then he basically implies that it's not worth the risk to take a good player who has character issues. Passing on a talented player for character concerns is playing it safe, buddy. Which means that succeeding in the draft is a mix of taking chances and minimizing risks. And deciding on the best player is based on who has the most upside coupled with who has the least risk. And I think most good teams are ones that find a balance between the two. |

Yep. The term "risk" incorporates negative attributes - injury prone, character issues, playing in a limited collegiate system, limited starting experience, etc.
