Someone explain to me what makes Aaron Curry worth the 3rd pick?

Since I'm seeing people starting to lean that way I really want to know...he's not a rusher 9 1/2 sacks in 4 years...he has nearly as many INT's as he does sacks over the course of his college career...

Does this mean he's a bad player no it doesn't, but the type of LB he is does not make him worth a top 5 pick. Fathom this Ernie Sims was taken 10 as a traditional 4-3 OLB he's a very nice player...is he a difference maker up in Detroit, he's not. And it can be easily argued that he's more naturally gifted than Curry is..the OLB position in a 4-3 is not a game changing core position.

Not to mention you could sign the #1 LB on the market of FA for half of what you'd have to pay Curry to do the same thing.

I still don't think Crabtree has done anything to separate from the pack at his position.

There does seem to be 'something' about Crabtree, I think I know what you mean, but I don't know that I can put my finger on it. Players are sometimes more than the sum of their parts, more than their measurables or their combine numbers or even the fact that their stats are spread-aided say they should be. So I understand the feeling.

It could be indigestion, too. I had a sub for dinner.

Either way, I'm not even considering a receiver high, Bowe's too good for that, even with his drops. And I'd like to see what Haley and his staff can do with guys like Franklin and Bradley (especially Franklin, if they can find a way to tap his speed and make him productive, watch out...). Although I'll be sorely tempted if Nicks is there in the second.

I just have a feeling he will do well on the pro level, top 10 worthy at the least if not top 5. BUT as I said, nothing to back that up with. If neither QB is there and Crabtree is left and we haven't traded LJ (fat chance) I really have no clue what to do. OT is the big "value" but damn that would be a hard pill to swallow... I would guess you have to go with Jenkins unless Raji(sp) somehow is WAY better than I imagine he is and we reach there. I seriously doubt that Raji is that good, I think he is just the ONLY NT that looks decent enough and that is why he is rated as high as he is now.

...but thankfully, I don't do this for a living....

In that vein, here is an interesting blurb I found on draftdaddy.com:

Quote:
Here's a small scouting report we recently received from someone very close to Boston College star Ron Brace: "Maybe the only true nose-tackle in this draft, Ron Brace is the prototypical run-stuffer (i.e. Shaun Rogers) in a 3-4 defensive scheme. Brace was named second-team all-A.C.C. last season, playing alongside all-american teammate, BJ Raji. Had 11 tackles-for-loss and 3 sacks as a senior".

While most project Brace as a 2nd-3rd rounder, the same source also told us: "Several scouts have said Ron is curently a late 1st on some team's draft boards". Teams that we (DD.com) believe could be looking at Brace in round one include: San Diego (Jamal Williams will be 33 soon), Miami (They have a huge void at the spot), New England (Vince Wilfork's contract is up in '10) and Pittsburgh (Casey Hampton is good, but getting older).

Since this wasn't answered - he played in 22 games, with 16 starts. The three games his RS freshman year looked to be mainly kneel down types (total of 7 passes thrown), so, in reality, it is more like 19 GP with 16 GS.

Igor Olshansky/Junior Siavii anyone?

How about Julius Peppers/Ryan Sims?

Mario Williams/the rest of a North Carolina State line?

It's hard for me to believe that both Brace and Raji are NFL caliber studs. Maybe it is Brace, and not Raji. Who knows? But I'd bet a dollar to a doughnut that one of them is a tomato can while the other ends up being a player.

He's not half the college player AJ Hawk was and Hawk has been disappointing so far.
I dont think anyone has said you "build your team around him". We have 4-5 good players on Defense who have suffered under bad coaching and scheme. We're just talking about adding a very good player/playmaker to the TEAM. Raise the talent level and use them correctly and you start to improve. There are no overnight fixes out there.

Probably, though I was referring to the "only true nose-tackle in this draft" part.

That's it right there. There may not be a "build a team around him" type player in this draft besides a QB. And then there still may not be one or there may only be one. So if the Chiefs don't get a QB then what player is the type of player you build a team around. Malcom Jenkins because he has positional value? Even though there are better players on the board? At a position of need? It's almost like reaching for a player because of his positional value.

Saying that with Stafford not throwing till pro-day, Sanchez could help himself since NFL scouts still have Questions about him. Could help himself the same way Flacco did last year with Ryan not throwing. Says Sanchez is still undecided as to whether he will throw at combine.

Curry the best of a strong class. Shown he can cover and attack LOS ...Most NFL ready could go top 3.

All the Draft-a-QB-or-Die crowd will disagree, but I have to say, I like the guy a lot. I just don't like the position it leaves us in at QB. I don't feel like waiting for that...I still believe they'd have to consider trading down if the offer is made. But we haven't seen anything, I'm geeking for this combine to start so we can get a decent look at some of these guys.
