Matters not to me.
He's no more or less important because he made his way onto a smut journalism site.

Inquisitivly speaking, is there an outfit Larry Johnson could wear that would make you look askance at him?
I seriously doubt it. Larry Johnson is his own man.
His apparel choices are of no consequence to me.

Futhermore, who is to say what is and isn't appropriate or acceptable fashionably speaking?

I think a lot of this has to do with the attitudes toward certain cultures that some are incapable of identifying with.

Fashion by definition is culturally defined as what is popular. A skirt is just a skirt until society deems it cute, then it becomes fashion.

So we get to say.

And if the latter is in reference to the American Urban Black Male attire, thats crap. The outfit isn't culturally significant to the hood, to hunting, or to good taste anywhere.

What baffles me is why anyone would observe their right to sound off on another man's fashionable expression?

It's celeb voyeurism and it's the very reason why TMZ exists.

Who made you the arbiter of what is culturally significant to any culture other than your own?

Again, it's your own personal opinion of the man's attire. That's largely rooted in how disaffected you are from the culture that welcomes and characterizes that style of dress as "normal".

Are you able to comment on how this outfit might be significant?

Is Larry, who grew up in an middle to upper-middle class suburb able to comment? Isn't that more the point?

With regard to either, I'd be interested in hearing how this outfit is culturally significant, but I don't think Larry, himself, has any credibility in this regard. Thus the mocking.

It's significant because it's an extension of Hip Hop culture and the fashionable expression that accompanies it.

This is why you're about as qualified to critique his expression as you are to sit on a panel with Quantam Physicists. Kanye West grew up every bit as Middle Class as Larry Johnson did. This idea that such fashionable expression is only authentic when expressed by the lower class is silly.

Culture is defined by the attitudes, tastes, and behaviors favored by a particular group.

What more needs to be said?

Get over yourselves.

The questions I asked were in earnest, so I don't know why you're saying, "Get over yourselves."

Larry's expression, to me, rings hollow. When I look at him or hear him talk about how difficult he has it and has had it, I see a person who desperately wants to be something he's not.

He's the consummate wannabe from high school.

I've always heard he's a "wannabe", but I'm wondering what does he want to be?

I keep hearing the term "gangsta" being used to characterize his look.
The word is being misused.

That's only "gangsta" to those who don't truly identify with the culture.
Those who do find that laughable.

His admitted idol and model is Jay Z.
Can you imagine Jay Z in that outfit?

Hip Hop is do what you will with what you got. Cool for him that he's chosen to make people laugh. Thats really is a good thing.

As a fan of Jay-Z's since his foray into the mainstream began in 1996...
It's not as difficult to imagine as you'd like to think.

I'm certain that he's losing sleep over what people think of his choice in fashion.

Come on.

And this is coming from a person who would never wear that outfit either.

My point is simply, who cares?

Jay? No. Lupe or Pharrell or Schwayze? Sure. I think it just looks ridiculous because Larry is a big ass athlete. If it were on one of the little impish hiphop dudes, it wouldn't look as silly.

Larry Johnson was born and raised in the U.S. He's a part of my culture. Just because he's black doesn't mean he's so drastically different from me. I've been known to beat a bitch.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, I've watched the men iron creases into their jeans since long before I could walk. And they did it without looking like absolute idiots. And they did it while totally existing in MY culture.

A part of American culture? Certainly, but let's not pretend that there aren't other cultures within American culture that are every bit as significant. Sub-cultures that you may not identify with.

Fair enough, but the fact that the two of you both grew up in America doesn't necessarily make you a-alikes either.

That particular phenomenon is easily 15 years old by now.
This is a much different time.

And again, you're only representing your opinion.
I know people who happen to think ironing creases into their jeans (largely West Coast culture) was corny. Corny back then even.
