Chiefs to wear throwback uniforms

Awesome!

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/chi...y/1102859.html

The Cowboys and Texans shared the Dallas market in competing football leagues in the early 1960s but never settled the matter of supremacy on the field.

They will get a chance this season. The Texans, who in 1963 moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs, will play the Cowboys at Arrowhead Stadium. The NFL on Monday granted the teams permission to wear their original uniforms and helmets from their inaugural seasons of 1960.

“Personally, that’s something I’m excited about,” Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said. “Even though the Cowboys weren’t part of the AFL, their history is linked with that of the AFL and the Chiefs.”

The Chiefs will wear the same throwback uniforms and helmets for two other games this season. Both will come against a rival from the AFC West. One will be at Arrowhead, the other on the road.

The game against the Cowboys might mean the most to Hunt. His late father, Lamar Hunt, founded the Texans and the AFL in 1960. The NFL launched the Cowboys that same season to battle him for the Dallas market.

The Cowboys chased the Texans out of town after three seasons. Because they played in separate leagues, the teams never played one another.

“I have no doubt my father challenged (Cowboys owner) Clint Murchison probably many times during those three years,” Hunt said. “I’m sure the NFL told Clint he couldn’t play a team from that upstart league. So we’ll finally have a chance to do that.

“This will be a fun way to remember what happened 50 years ago.”

The Chiefs and Cowboys have played eight times in the regular season since the AFL and NFL merged in 1970. Dallas won five times.

The Chiefs have had essentially the same uniform since moving to KC. The logo is a little smaller on the helmets is the only change. Might as well not do it at all if we are just going to put a slightly larger emblem on the helmets. I think it is a great idea to wear the Texans uniforms. Hell, the Donks are wearing their much hated original uniforms, that is much worse than us having Texas on the helmet.

For the record, I've never liked Texas. But that is irrelevant here.

You appear to feel threatened by this, which sounds like an inferiority complex to me. Why else would you see it as an insult?
Not threatened at all. Not feeling inferior to Texas either. And not so testy. However, I am extremely envious of you and all the lucky people inhabiting the greatest place on Earth.

So why do you think it's a great idea to wear the Texan uniforms? What is great about it? [BTW, the Donks originated in Denver, so it's not really the same argument.]

If so, you're either a glutton for punishment or a better fan than me I guess.
I'd love to go to SD and watch if that is where they wear them. I'd NEVER go to Oakland no matter what, I value my life too much (I used to live in the Bay Area in the 80s, when the Faders were in LA, but even then it was dangerous to wear a Chiefs jersey or hat anywhere in the BA). Those Fader fans are psycho.

I heard people actually complaining about this on the radio today, don't people have something more important to be worried about?

I mean really if the uniforms a team wears to honor the past offend people that much because it happened in another market your inferiority complex is overtaking your judgment.

I think wearing throwback uniforms is a great way to celebrate 50 years, but there is no point in wearing '60s Chiefs uniforms since they are essentially the same as now. And at least we don't have to wear the ugly brown and yellow that Denver has to wear.

Didn't know about the "Los Angeles" Chargers. Good! Make the road game at SD, and we're all good to go!

I used to go to Chiefs/Raider games in oakland every year in my Chiefs gear. Though, i would cover up in the stadium hallways. I seen some bad things happen to Chiefs fans in there. Most people though, talk a big game and wont do shit. I have had to step up to some fans as well, they will back down, but you do got some drunk knuckle head that wont and him and his friends will have a field day on you. lol

I am hoping to start going again in a few years. Live is nice and all, but i am the only Chiefs fan with all m y friends which are Raider fans. lol

We really should just daisy-cutter Oakland in to oblivion. Doesn't the Golden Gate run from SF to Oakland?

Wow. Just got off Google Maps. What a ****ing dump Oakland is. "McCaffe Coliseum"? Gay.

Yeah, I lived in Sunnyvale for most of the 80s. I worked with one guy who was a Chiefs fan, and it was us against about 20 Raiders fans. Luckily the 49ers were great then, so a lot of people there were Niner fans, and they hated the Raiders as much as us.

I remember one year there was a preseason game in Oakland against the Niners. It was kind of a big deal since the Raiders were in LA at the time. A lot of Niner fans went, and there were numerous reports of Raider fans assaulting them - even though they aren't rivals and aren't even in the same conference. There was one instance of a Raider fan throwing a beer on a man who was with his 8 year old son. Classy bunch those Raider fans are....

I was threatened a couple of times when I wore a Chiefs hat.

No, the Bay Bridge runs between SF and Oakland. The Golden Gate goes from SF to Marin County. But i do like the daisy cutter idea.....

Maybe there is a point in wearing the only marginally different 60's uniforms. As in, "Hey, we didn't have to jack with with our uniforms over the years because they're inherently classy and timeless." [Unlike the Donks.] What's wrong with that? Maybe you add AFL patches and/or something to honor Lamar, as they did after he died.

Whatever. You have your opinion and I have mine. Hopefully, we'll be talking about a Chiefs' playoff victory next January.

I've been thinking about relocating to Santa Cruz if and when the economy perks up. Looks like it's nice and far away from Oakland AND SF.

Nice.

I hope that too. I also hope that the Donks will wear the vertical striped clown socks that they wore with that uniform. That would be hilarious.
