Yeah, it is...he regressed big time in his 2nd year...11 TD's and 15 INT's...5.9 YPA?

There was a reason they drafted Manning #1 overall...they were looking for a franchise QB...because they didn't think Brees was going to pan out.

If they knew Brees was primed for a huge breakout season...they wouldn't have taken a QB...

Also, you can't compare Brees/Rivers to Sanchez/Cassel anyways.

Brees was making pennies...Cassel and Sanchez will both have ginormous contracts.

Either way, you have a short memory if you don't remember when the Chargers were drafting Manning/Rivers...because everyone was writing off Drew Brees.

Actually Cassel is only on a 1 year deal so the situation isn't all that different...

Unless you are 100% certain you have a franchise QB if there's a guy on the board you feel is one, you don't pass.

Bust might be a harsh word, but he's essentially right.

AJ Smith wanted to expunge the stink of the previous regime. And hidden in those numbers you posted is the EXTREMELY short leash Brees was on. I posted it here at one point - the dudes yards per attempt was the worst of any starting QB in the league by over a full yard at one point.

and also, Brees emergence put the Chargers in a horrible situation...they couldn't keep him no matter how good he was because they had a $40M QB sitting on their bench...so what if Rivers totally flopped? They let a franchise QB get away and all they got in return was a compensatory pick.

Yeah, it worked out. Rivers is damn good...but is he better than Brees? I don't think so.

Pioli knows Cassel...if anyone thinks Pioli wants Sanchez or Stafford, they are nuts. The only way they are taking one is if they absolutely feel everyone thinks they are bluffing and then they draft him and hold him hostage over one of the teams that want him...

Worst case scenario...we have Sanchez/Cassel.

Best case scenario...those teams start bidding against one another for his rights.
