I just read a truly horrific diatribe about giving Croyle a "real chance" at my other board, so I'll believe damn near anything that spews from the typing mouth-holes of this fan base.

There was a reason they drafted Manning #1 overall...they were looking for a franchise QB...because they didn't think Brees was going to pan out. If they knew Brees was primed for a huge breakout season...they wouldn't have taken a QB... Also, you can't compare Brees/Rivers to Sanchez/Cassel anyways. Brees was making pennies...Cassel and Sanchez will both have ginormous contracts. Either way, you have a short memory if you don't remember when the Chargers were drafting Manning/Rivers...because everyone was writing off Drew Brees. Everyone. |

"The San Diego Chargers finished the 2003 season with a 4-12 record which was the worst record of any team in the NFL that season. This entitled them to receive the first overall selection in that year's draft. The Giants also finished 4–12 and decided that their primary need was a franchise quarterback."

"Brees' career with the Chargers was briefly put in jeopardy after San Diego acquired N.C. State's Philip Rivers. After the trade, it was almost certain Brees' days as the Chargers' starting QB were over. However, Rivers held out nearly all of training camp. This forced the Chargers coaching staff to give Brees one last look and he persevered to remain the starter throughout the 2004 season and jump to near the top of the league's statistical rankings."

"Brees was named the starter for the 2003 season, passing for a career low 2,108 yards and earning a 67.5 rating. The Chargers went 4-12 under the leadership of both Brees and Flutie. San Diego earned the first overall pick with said record, and through a deal with the New York Giants got Philip Rivers for Eli Manning. However, due to the long contract negotiations between Rivers and the Chargers, Brees started the following season and had a break out year."

So, OTWP, the Chargers benched Brees for Flutie and proceeded to take a QB #1 overall...but they hadn't written him off and considered him a bust?
Yeah, ok. |

Actually Cassel is only on a 1 year deal so the situation isn't all that different...
Unless you are 100% certain you have a franchise QB if there's a guy on the board you feel is one, you don't pass. |

AJ Smith wanted to expunge the stink of the previous regime. And hidden in those numbers you posted is the EXTREMELY short leash Brees was on. I posted it here at one point - the dudes yards per attempt was the worst of any starting QB in the league by over a full yard at one point. |

and also, Brees emergence put the Chargers in a horrible situation...they couldn't keep him no matter how good he was because they had a $40M QB sitting on their bench...so what if Rivers totally flopped? They let a franchise QB get away and all they got in return was a compensatory pick.
Yeah, it worked out. Rivers is damn good...but is he better than Brees? I don't think so. Pioli knows Cassel...if anyone thinks Pioli wants Sanchez or Stafford, they are nuts. The only way they are taking one is if they absolutely feel everyone thinks they are bluffing and then they draft him and hold him hostage over one of the teams that want him... Worst case scenario...we have Sanchez/Cassel. Best case scenario...those teams start bidding against one another for his rights. |

Imagine that. A QB that was taken in the 2nd round might lose his job to a guy that was taken 4th overall and is making a metric shit-ton of money. Shocking. |
