Yahoo Sports: Cavs land Shaq for Wallace, Pavlovic

Cavs land Shaq for Wallace, Pavlovic

By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports and Johnny Ludden 2 hours, 38 minutes ago

The Cleveland Cavaliers have reached an agreement in principle to acquire Phoenix Suns center Shaquille O’Neal(notes), multiple sources involved in the talks told Yahoo! Sports late Thursday night.

Cleveland will send Ben Wallace(notes), Sasha Pavlovic(notes), the 46th pick in Thursday’s draft and cash to the Suns for O’Neal.

Cleveland and Phoenix were both juggling multiple trade possibilities with other teams, with the Cavs involved with as many as six trade scenarios.

Yet the disappointing Eastern Conference finals loss to the Orlando Magic left Cavs GM Danny Ferry with incredible pressure to accumulate talent around James in the final season prior to his 2010 free agency. James has blessed the O’Neal trade, especially because it should give his overmatched frontline a chance to compete with Dwight Howard in the playoffs. Ferry and Phoenix GM Steve Kerr are close friends and had talked off and on about a Shaq deal since the February trade deadline.

O’Neal, 37, makes $21 million next season, and the Suns were determined to move him in a package that would save them money. Wallace made $14 million and could take a buyout to retire, and only $1.5 million of Pavlovic’s $4.9 million salary is guaranteed.

Shaq's a terrible pick and roll defender, but that's not much of a change from the slow-footed Big Z.

2006 - Rajon Rondo
2005 - Nate Robinson
2004 - Luol Deng

Add on top of that the Suns brutal reach of a pick in Robin Lopez last season and you have a recipe for a bad team. Rondo is a top 5 PG in the NBA, Fernandez and Robinson are still getting better and Deng is a star in the making if he can stay healthy.
rumor is amare is about to roll and they might as well trade nash to the knicks now so they can get something for him

What would be the point? Amare would never resign with Memphis.

The Magic just lost two starters for Carter. The Cavs gave up two backups that underachieved all season and showed up only for a few minutes in one or two playoff games. All for Shaq, who even at his age, is more dominant than Vince Carter.

The Cavs have plenty of mid-range shooters. Having a jump-shooting center doesn't help them all that much. Shaq is going to really help the Cavs spread things out. You know how Lebron can be a striker from outside the paint AND be a force in the middle? Having a solid option in Shaq creating space is going to allow him to be even MORE elusive and deadly than he already was.

This move is going to rape next season. I really don't think the Celtics even with Garnett can stop them.

It is a little early to be putting them in the Finals. Cleveland's shooting 3 point, mid-range or otherwise was bordering on pathetic in the series against Orlando. A jump shooter that can knock down open shots is exactly what the Cavs need. I have a hard time seeing Shaq "help spread things out." Shaq takes up space, and tons of it in the lane.

Obviously the move improves the Cavs, but it does not address their biggest problems. Pick and roll defense is what lost them the series against Orlando, and believe it or not, Shaq's defense in that regard is as bad or worse than Z's. Give LeBron and lights out shooter and then they be very tough to beat.

Orlando gave up Alston, who isn't a starter with Nelson healthy, Battie, who is little more than a bench piece and Lee for Carter.

It shakes out to Lee for Carter. Lee's a very good young player, but he's a little redundant there. Orlando desperately needed someone that can drive the lane and make their own shot to take the pressure off their jump shooters and Howard. Carter is a great fit for them. It also actually frees up a little cash for them, IIRC, which would allow them to re-sign Hedo.

The Spurs have made the best move of the offseason so far, getting Richard Jefferson for peanuts.

Both of those moves smoke the Shaq trade. LeBron desperately needed a wing with size and athleticism, he didn't need another plodding center who can't run the floor and won't defend a pick and roll. Either Jefferson or Carter would've been far better fits for them.
