Too many freaking deer

We're on the road tonight, heading into Indianapolis doing about 75. All of the sudden my headlights illuminate a freaking deer standing on the interstate. No time to brake, I just swerved HARD into to the other lane (I knew it was clear). Tires skid and for half an instant, I wasn't sure I was going to be able to control the vehicle.

I have to say everything went perfectly. If I had to do that 100 times, I'm pretty sure I'd plow the deer or lose control a few times.

It looked huge, but no one saw if it was a buck or a doe. I only got a good look about half way up its back haunches.

Drove for the next 40 miles barely daring to blink, and flashing my brights a couple times a minute.

Saw another deer laying on the side of road, basically cut in half.

Seems like we need to have an extended deer season to thin the herd a bit, before they thin us.

No, that’s a bad plan any more. The pavement sucks and it’s crawling with deer.

Most states have horrible deer management programs. They need to allow does to be taken daily in certain counties. It really becomes extremely hazardous during harvest.

I live about 200 yards from Shawnee Mission Park. This area has the highest concentration of deer in the U.S. They've finally decided to come in with sharp-shooters to cull the herd. There were times last winter when I had 20 deer in my yard.

It took months and months to finally allow culling the herd. There was strong opposition to killing Bambi, but those who opposed it just don't see the problem on a day-to-day basis like those of us who live near the park. The meat is going to be distributed to local food pantries, so it will be used and not wasted.

I'm not sure if you were doing that in order to see a crossing deer, or in an effort to scare them.... But you can blind a deer like that, and it will simply freeze and stare at you in the middle of the road. You're better off turning off your lights and honking the horn if you see a deer... Normally you don't have time to do anything though...

And they have extended deer season in quite a few states. They've created a second doe only season in early January. You can get as many additional doe tags as you want for about $10 a piece.

Someone tell Obama to let people stretch their unemployment checks with deer steak. Then they'd have more money for beer and car payments.

At least when a disease comes through in the next couple of years, all of those deer that congregate at your food site will swap enough spit to all catch the black death....

I do my part and then some every year. I love hunting deer. Big ones, small ones, does, bucks, oddities, ones with a limp, buckasaurus....all of them.

Hit that deer.

Here's a picture of the car my 17 yo daughter was driving 2 weeks ago. She swerved to miss a deer and took out a forest.

She had minor bumps and bruises and walked away but it could have easily gone the other way.

I've mentioned before, driving from Manhattan, NY, to St. Louis we passed practically more deer than cars. A good twenty or so carcasses on the side of the road, another 4-5 in the road, including one we had to straddle as we came over a rise and it was lying in the middle of the lane. Not an easy feat to straddle a deer carcass in a Lotus Elise.

My insurance agent when I lived in Texas always recommended hitting the deer.

You hit the deer and damage your car . . . act of God (you had no control over the deer's actions) - No raise in your rates.

You swerve to miss the deer and wind up hitting the guardrail and damage your car . . . failure to maintain control of your vehicle - Raise in rates.
